Two cables leave a Starlink Mini kit box. One carries power, one carries data, and only one of them gets harder to extend the longer you make it. Working out which is which before the drill comes out saves a second trip up the mast.

Two cables, two different problems
On a Standard Starlink dish, one cable does both jobs. Power goes out to the dish and data comes back on the same four pairs, in a non-standard Power over Ethernet arrangement, which is why the length limit on that cable is a resistance limit rather than a bandwidth limit. Our Starlink cable guide works through that budget in full.
The Mini separates the two. Power arrives on a dedicated DC cable, and data goes in and out through a latching Ethernet LAN port on the unit. Because they are separate paths, the engineering pressure lands on the power run, not the data run.
That is the whole insight of this article, and it inverts the instinct most people bring from the Standard kit. On a Mini, extending the Ethernet side is comparatively easy. Extending the DC side is where you have to do arithmetic.
Why the DC run carries the distance problem
The Mini’s input is rated 12–48 V at 60 W. Those two numbers together set the current, and current is what makes a cable warm.
Supply voltage | Current for 60 W | Relative conductor loss |
|---|
48 V | about 1.25 A | baseline |
|---|
24 V | about 2.5 A | about 4 times |
|---|
20 V (USB-C PD) | about 3 A | about 5.8 times |
|---|
12 V | about 5 A | about 16 times |
|---|
Two effects compound. Loss in a conductor rises with the square of the current, so dropping the voltage multiplies the heat. And voltage drop rises in direct proportion to current, so the same drop that is a rounding error on a 48 V supply is a meaningful fraction of a 20 V one.
The practical reading: a Mini fed from a USB-C PD source at 20 V has the least margin for a long or thin DC run, and a Mini fed at the top of its input range has the most. If the power source is fixed, the gauge and the length of the DC run are the only two variables you control.
This is also why the gauge question matters more here than on the data side. A data run at gigabit has 100 meters of specification behind it and crosstalk headroom to spare. A power run has a voltage window and a device that will not boot if it leaves the window.
The 100 W source requirement is not a suggestion
The specification asks for 100 W at 20 V / 5 A minimum when the Mini is powered from a USB-C PD source, using Starlink’s USB-C to barrel jack cable. Average consumption is 25–40 W, so a supply that meets the minimum still has to absorb the peaks.
The failure mode is familiar to anyone who has powered a laptop from the wrong charger: the supply negotiates a lower profile, the device browns out under load, and the symptom looks like a connectivity problem rather than a power one. On a Mini, snow melt and cold-weather operation are the loads that expose it.
Two consequences for the installation:
- Size the supply for the requirement, not the average draw. 25–40 W average is not the number to buy against.
- Do not measure the DC run at rest. A voltage reading taken with the unit idle tells you very little about what happens when the heater and the radio both draw.
Sealing is conditional, and the specification says so
The Mini’s environmental rating is quoted as IP67 Type 4, with the DC Power Cable and Starlink Plug or cable installed. Read that carefully, because it is a statement about a configuration, not about the hardware alone.
The unit reaches IP67 Type 4 when both of these are true: the DC power cable is fitted, and the Ethernet port is occupied by the Starlink Plug or by a Starlink cable. Starlink’s support documentation makes the same point about the DC side specifically, describing the barrel jack end of the cable as forming an IP67 rated connection with the Mini kit.
So the weatherproofing is not a property of the dish. It is a property of the dish plus what you put in its two openings.
Opening | Sealed when | Not sealed when |
|---|
DC input | The supplied DC cable or the USB-C to barrel jack cable is fitted | The port is left open, or an unsealed adapter is used |
|---|
Ethernet LAN port | The Starlink Plug is fitted, or a Starlink cable is installed | An ordinary molded RJ45 lead is fitted, or the port is left open |
|---|
If the Mini is going outdoors with the Ethernet port in use, that is a design decision rather than an afterthought. The Mini Ethernet port guide covers the port side in detail.
What the environmental numbers actually allow
The rating is worth reading alongside the operating figures, because they answer different questions. IP67 Type 4 covers water and dust ingress. The temperature range covers function.
Figure | Value |
|---|
Environmental rating | IP67 Type 4, as configured above |
|---|
Operating temperature | −30 °C to 50 °C (−22 °F to 122 °F) |
|---|
Snow melt capability | Up to 25 mm / hour (1 in / hour) |
|---|
Operational wind speed | 96 km/h+ (60 mph+) |
|---|
The electronics are rated for weather. What the installation has to deliver is a cable path that does not undo it: connectors that seal, a drip loop below every entry point so water runs off rather than tracking along the cable, strain relief so the termination is not carrying the cable’s weight, and a route that avoids sharp edges and anything running hot.
Those are installation habits rather than part numbers, and they are the same habits that apply to any outdoor power-and-data run. The pulling tension and bend radius guide covers the mechanical side.
Scenarios
A Mini on a pole above a cabin in a snow belt. The DC run is short because the supply is close. The Ethernet run is the one that goes inside, and it can be as long as the 100-meter channel allows. Seal both openings and leave a drip loop under the enclosure.
An off-grid setup fed from a battery bank through a USB-C PD source. This is the case with the least margin. Check the supply meets 100 W at 20 V / 5 A, keep the DC run short and the conductor heavy, and test under load rather than at idle.
A Mini on a vehicle roof with a wired device inside. The DC cable stays sealed and short; the data path runs into the cabin on a lead that seals at the unit. Two independent runs, two independent checks.
A site more than 100 meters from where the data needs to arrive. The DC side stays local to a power source, and the data side changes medium. Past the 100-meter Ethernet channel, fiber is the answer rather than a longer copper lead.
FAQ
Is the Starlink Mini waterproof or weatherproof?
It is rated IP67 Type 4 with the DC power cable fitted and the Starlink Plug or a Starlink cable in the Ethernet port. The rating depends on that configuration.
Can I leave the Ethernet port open outdoors?
The specification does not describe the unit that way. Fit the Starlink Plug when no cable is in use.
What power source does the Mini need?
Its input is rated 12–48 V at 60 W. From a USB-C PD source, the requirement is 100 W at 20 V / 5 A minimum.
Why does the DC cable length matter more than the Ethernet cable length?
Because voltage drop takes a much larger share of a low-voltage supply, and the current needed to deliver 60 W rises as the voltage falls.
Can I use a USB-C extension instead of a proper DC cable?
The DC path is where sealing and voltage drop both matter. Adding unsealed adapters into it works against both.
Does the Mini work below freezing?
Its operating range starts at −30 °C, and it has snow melt capability rated to 25 mm per hour. The cable and connectors are what the installation has to protect.
Can I bury the DC cable?
Only with a cable rated for direct burial. The supplied cable is an above-ground outdoor cable, and burying an unrated one leads to water ingress and an intermittent fault that is very hard to find.
