A farmhouse installer put the dish on a ridge 180 feet from the house. He bought a cable listed as 150 meters, ran it in one piece, and handed over a working system. Three weeks later the dish started rebooting every afternoon, reliably, around the time the snow-melt heater came on.
The cable’s construction was fine. It was too long for the power it had to carry. The listing said 150 m. The people who actually measured it put the practical ceiling near 150 feet.
Why Isn’t a Starlink Cable Just an Ethernet Cable?
Because it carries power as well as data, and that changes every rule about distance.
The link between the router and the dish is gigabit Ethernet carrying non-standard Power over Ethernet. On the rectangular dish, the orange and green pairs are positive and the blue and brown pairs are negative — which is why you cannot power it from an ordinary PoE injector. The router behaves as a 48V, 2A supply, so 96 watts are available at the router port.
Two consequences follow.
Power loss is the limit, not bandwidth. The radio link decides your speed; the cable decides whether the dish gets enough voltage to stay booted. Every meter of copper and every connector adds resistance, and resistance is what turns a working installation into one that reboots when the heater draws current.
The connectors are not standard on every generation. That fact splits the category in two, and it is the first thing to establish before you look at any specification.
Which Generation Do You Have?
Answer this first, because the wrong generation is simply the wrong cable.
Gen 2 (the rectangular actuated dish) uses a proprietary SPX connector and Cat5e FTP construction. There is no standard tooling for splicing or field-terminating it, which is why the Gen 2 market is replacement cables and adapters rather than cable reels.
Gen 3 (Standard, High Performance and Mini) moved to a standard RJ45 with Cat6 FTP construction — the change that made field extensions practical, and why Gen 3 dominates aftermarket demand.
Which Starlink cable do you need
How to tell which you have: check the label on the bottom of the dish. "Standard," "High Performance" or "Mini" means Gen 3 and an RJ45 cable. A rectangular dish or a "Gen 2" label means SPX.
One warning about adapters. An SPX-to-RJ45 adapter adds a mated connection in the middle of a power path, and it is the most-complained-about part in this category. A sub-$12 adapter is where you should expect failure four months in.
How Far Can You Actually Run It?
Here is where the published guidance falls apart, and the error is large.
Source | Stated maximum | In feet |
|---|
Hands-on teardown with measured resistance | 150 ft | ~46 m |
|---|
A cable vendor’s buying guide | 150 m | ~492 ft |
|---|
That is not a rounding difference. It is a factor of three, and the likeliest explanation is a copied unit error: Starlink sells an official 150 ft long replacement cable, and somewhere along the way "150 ft" became "150 m", then propagated from guide to guide.
The teardown’s number comes from resistance, not a datasheet. Two measured thresholds:
- 1.8 ohm round-trip, about 88 W available at the dish — stable.
- 2.5 ohm round-trip — just barely unstable.
The resistance budget for a Starlink run
The dish rebooting after a few minutes of snow pre-heat is the symptom of a run sitting too close to that upper threshold, because the heater is the largest load the cable ever sees.
What resistance is made of: 23 AWG Cat6/Cat6A contributes roughly 0.03 ohm per meter on a continuous run, and each connector adds 0.02 to 0.1 ohm round-trip. Patch panels are extra connectors, so keep them off this path.
What Gauge Should the Copper Be?
The sources disagree here, and the disagreement is instructive.
The teardown measured the original cable at 24 AWG and recommended going up to 23 AWG or larger when extending. A vendor guide recommends 24 AWG as the minimum for runs over 50 ft and warns that 26–28 AWG causes measurable voltage drop and heating under a 45 W load. That same vendor’s specification table then lists Gen 3 cable as 26 AWG — below its own stated minimum.
24 AWG versus 26 AWG on a long run
The practical lesson: the AWG printed in a marketplace title is marketing copy until a test report backs it. What matters is the round-trip resistance of the finished assembly, measured end to end under load.
Treat the PoE claims with the same caution. Some listings present Gen 3 cables as IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 / PoE++ compliant at 45 W. The observed Gen 3 supply is reported at 30V, and standard PoE voltages sit in the 44–57V band — a commenter on the teardown put it plainly that 30V "would not be a bt or any typical PoE standard." If the supply is not at a standard PoE voltage, a "bt-compliant cable" claim is marketing, not a compatibility guarantee.
Do You Need a Shielded Cable?
Yes for the outdoor run, for the reason you would expect: a foil shield with a drain wire reduces electromagnetic interference. Gen 2 is FTP, Gen 3 is FTP, and the teardown confirms plain stranded STP Cat5e on the original rectangular-dish cable.
One trap is real. If you install a grounded surge protector at the service entrance and then continue with a shielded cable, make sure there is no continuous ground path between the surge protector and the router. That creates a ground loop, and under a ground fault some of the surge current can travel on your shield instead of to earth.
Can You Bury It?
Not unless the cable carries a direct-burial rating, and do not assume it does. The original cable is not rated for direct burial. Burying unrated cable leads to water intrusion and an intermittent connection that is miserable to diagnose.
The IP rating is where the generations differ most when comparing listings. Gen 2 is typically rated IP67 at the connector; Gen 3 is commonly offered at IP68 as an integrated rating. IP68 matters most where the termination sits in weather. For an overhead run with the joint under an eave, IP67 may be adequate; for a connector on a mast in coastal spray, it is not.
Two rules that cost nothing: use outdoor-rated cable outdoors — if all you have is riser cable, paint it — and keep the cable away from surfaces above 60 °C and HVAC exhaust.
Why Does the Cable Get Warm?
Because it is carrying power, and warmth is free feedback.
Mild warmth below about 40 °C is normal under a 45 W load. Sustained heat above roughly 55 °C points at undersized conductors — 28 AWG, a bad termination, or no ventilation. Underrated copper turns power into heat instead of delivering it, so the dish’s voltage margin shrinks while the cable quietly cooks.
Warm cable plus a dish that reboots is a diagnosis. Warm cable with a stable connection is just a cable doing work.
What About Grounding and Surge Protection?
The dish must be grounded, and on an unmodified factory cable that grounding comes through the router. The moment you cut or extend, you own it. Three steps from the teardown:
- Use a grounded RJ45 plug for at least the first termination on the dish side.
- Fit a high-quality, grounded, PoE-compatible Ethernet surge protector at the termination closest to the dish — ideally where the cable enters the building.
- Keep the run short and connector-free. Each joint is both a resistance contributor and a future corrosion site.
Alternatively, skip the surge protector and run shielded cable, connectors and plugs for the whole path with continuity between router and dish. Do not do half of each.
For a marginal run, test it under load: turn on snow pre-heat and run speed tests back to back. A dish that reboots is telling you the resistance is too high — a better test than any meter reading taken at rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a regular Cat6 cable for Starlink?
On Gen 3, yes, if the finished assembly meets the resistance requirement. A generic Cat6 patch cord never tested end to end under load is where "intermittent outages" comes from.
Can I cut and re-terminate the cable to length?
Not recommended, and the reason is the weather seal rather than the conductors: re-termination usually costs you the IP rating. Use a shorter cable or coil the excess.
Will a longer cable slow my internet down?
Not by throttling bandwidth. But voltage drop on an over-long run can make the dish throttle power or reboot, which looks like a speed problem and is not one.
How much spare length should I buy?
About 10 percent for routing. A 60 ft span becomes a 66 ft cable, and the slack has somewhere to go.
Is Starlink’s PoE standard?
No. It is non-standard on both generations — proprietary connectors on Gen 2, a non-standard supply voltage on Gen 3. That is why standard PoE injectors do not power the dish.
The Short Answers
Which cable depends on which dish. Gen 2 means SPX, Cat5e FTP, replacement-or-adapter only. Gen 3 means RJ45, Cat6 FTP, and ordinary cable. Check the label under the dish first.
The length limit is about power, not speed. Measured thresholds sit near 1.8 ohm round-trip for a stable system and 2.5 ohm for a marginal one. The practical ceiling is around 150 feet; the widely repeated "150 m" looks like a unit error from Starlink’s own 150 ft replacement cable.
Go up in gauge, not down. 23 AWG or larger on a long run; 24 AWG as a floor. A vendor table listing 26 AWG while its own text calls 24 AWG the minimum tells you how AWG claims get written.
Keep connectors out of the path. Each adds roughly 0.02–0.1 ohm round-trip and is a corrosion site. Continuous runs beat jointed runs.
Shield the run, and mind the ground. Foil shield with a drain wire. If you ground a surge protector at the entry point, do not also run a continuous shield ground to the router.
Do not bury unrated cable. The original is not rated for direct burial, and water finds a way.
Then test it the way it will be used: snow pre-heat on, speed tests back to back, and a dish that stays up.
