Does Starlink Mini Have an Ethernet Port? Yes, and It Changes How You Extend the Run

October 6, 2026

Yes. The Mini has one Ethernet LAN port built into the terminal itself, which puts a wired port outdoors on the dish rather than indoors on the router. The current Standard kit’s Router 3 has two, but both of them sit inside the building.

Figure 1: Starlink Mini integrated RJ45 ethernet port and weatherproof barrel connection.

That placement difference matters more than it first appears, because it separates two jobs a Standard cable has to do at once. On a Standard dish, a single cable carries power out to the dish and data back from it. On the Mini, those are two different cables.

Quick answer

Question	Answer
Does the Starlink Mini have an Ethernet port?	Yes. One latching Ethernet LAN port, built into the unit
How many ports?	One
What fits it?	The port is specified with the Starlink Plug, and accepts a Starlink cable
Does the Standard kit have one?	Yes, two, on Router 3 indoors. The earlier Gen 2 kit needed a separate adapter
Does the port carry power?	No. Power arrives on the separate DC power cable
Can I use an ordinary Cat6 patch lead?	Electrically yes. The environmental rating is a separate question
What if I need more than one wired device?	Put a switch on the port

The port, read from the specification sheet

Starlink’s own Mini specification sheet lists the interface as "One (1) Latching Ethernet LAN port with Starlink Plug." Two words in that line carry most of the meaning.

Latching means the connector is retained rather than friction-fit. On a mast, on a vehicle roof, in wind, a retention latch is the difference between a link that stays up and one that quietly re-seats itself at the worst possible moment.

With Starlink Plug means the port is supplied with a sealing plug, and that the plug is part of how the unit reaches its environmental rating. That detail catches people out, so it gets its own section below.

The rest of the networking side is conventional: the Mini runs a dual-band 3×3 MU-MIMO radio on Wi-Fi 5, covers roughly 112 m² (1,200 ft²), accepts up to 128 devices, and is compatible with Starlink mesh systems. The specification sheet does not publish a link rate for the Ethernet port, and on a satellite terminal the port is not what limits throughput in any case.

Why the Mini is the easier terminal to extend

On a Standard dish the cable is a combined power-and-data run. Starlink puts power to the dish and takes data back down the same four pairs in a non-standard arrangement, which is why run length on that cable is limited by resistance rather than by bandwidth, and why an over-long run shows up as a dish that reboots under load instead of a slow connection. Our Starlink cable guide works through that resistance budget in detail.

The Mini does not work that way. The kit ships with two separate paths:

Item in the Mini kit	What it carries
DC Power Cable, 15 m (49.2 ft)	Power to the unit
Power Supply	AC input
Starlink Plug	Seals the Ethernet port
Kickstand, Pipe Adapter and Flat Mount	Mounting hardware

Power arrives on the DC cable. Data goes in and out through the Ethernet port. Two paths, two independent sets of rules.

The practical consequence is the reason this article exists. Extending the Mini’s Ethernet run does not spend the power budget, because it is not the same run. That makes the Mini materially easier to extend than a Standard dish, provided you keep track of which side you are extending.

Choosing a lead for the port

The port is a standard Ethernet LAN interface, so an ordinary Cat6 patch lead plugs in and the link comes up. Three things to get right:

Length. Twisted-pair Ethernet is specified to a 100-meter channel, and the Mini’s data path is not subject to the resistance limit that constrains the Standard’s combined cable. Inside a building, length is not your constraint.

Construction. The Mini is a portable terminal, so the lead gets coiled, packed and re-routed. Use a stranded-conductor patch lead rather than solid cable. Solid conductor does not tolerate repeated handling, which is the whole reason patch leads exist as a separate product.

Jacket. Indoors, a general-purpose jacket is fine. Outdoors, the jacket and the connector are the next section, and they are not optional detail.

The catch: the port is part of the weatherproofing

This is the part worth reading twice.

The Mini’s environmental rating is stated as IP67 Type 4, with the DC Power Cable and Starlink Plug or cable installed. The rating is conditional. It describes the unit in a specific state, port sealed and power cable fitted, not the unit by itself.

What is in the Ethernet port	Effect on the stated rating
Starlink Plug fitted	Port sealed as the specification describes
Starlink cable fitted	Port occupied by a sealed connector
Nothing	Port open
An ordinary molded RJ45 lead	Port occupied, but not by a sealing connector

Starlink says so outright in the Mini specification sheet’s own footnote under the Ethernet port illustration: the product "is no longer rated IP67 with a standard RJ45 cable." A sealed Starlink cable is what the rating assumes, and nothing else is.

Indoors, none of that matters. Outdoors, it is the whole question. If the Mini is going on a mast, a pole or a vehicle roof, the port has to end the working day sealed, either by the Starlink Plug or by a lead whose connector seals as well as the plug does. A molded RJ45 boot is strain relief, not a seal.

Decide that at the design stage. Finding it out at commissioning usually means a second trip up the mast.

Three more things that catch people out

Do not feed PoE into the port. The port carries data. Power arrives on the DC cable. Fitting a standard PoE injector to the LAN port is not part of the arrangement the Mini is built around, and standard PoE voltages are not what its input expects.

The power side is a 60 W device with a specific source requirement. The Mini’s input is rated 12–48 V at 60 W, draws 25–40 W on average, and needs 100 W at 20 V / 5 A minimum when powered from a USB-C PD source. An undersized supply is a common cause of a Mini that will not come up.

One port means one wired uplink. Fan-out requires a switch. The 128-device figure is the Mini’s overall capacity, not a count of wired ports.

Scenarios

A farm office with a single wired workstation. A patch lead from the LAN port to the machine. No adapter, no extra hardware, nothing to configure.

A camper build with the Mini on the roof. The LAN port stays sealed with the Starlink Plug and the DC cable does the work. If a wired device is needed inside, a lead that seals at the unit beats an open port under a rain hood.

A small site with a Mini and four wired devices. One switch on the LAN port. Plan around the single wired uplink rather than around the 128-device figure.

A backup link for an existing network. The LAN port hands off to your own router or firewall. This is where a factory-terminated Cat6 lead earns its money over a hand-crimped one, because the link either comes up clean or it does not.

FAQ

Does the Starlink Mini have an Ethernet port?

Yes, one latching Ethernet LAN port built into the unit.

How many Ethernet ports does the Mini have?

One.

What is the Starlink Plug?

It is the sealing plug supplied with the Mini kit that occupies the Ethernet port when no cable is connected. It is named in the port specification, and it is part of how the unit reaches its IP67 Type 4 rating, which is why it belongs back in the port whenever the port is empty.

Does the Standard kit have an Ethernet port?

Yes. Router 3 in the current Standard kit has two latching Ethernet LAN ports. The earlier Gen 2 Standard Actuated hardware is the generation that needed a separate Ethernet Adapter.

Can I plug a normal Ethernet cable into the Mini?

It fits and it works electrically. Whether it preserves the IP67 Type 4 rating is a different question, and a plain molded RJ45 lead does not.

Is the Mini’s LAN port PoE?

No. Power comes in on the DC power cable.

How do I connect more than one wired device?

Add a switch. The Mini supports up to 128 connected devices in total; the LAN port is the single wired uplink.

Can I use the Mini with my own router?

Yes. The LAN port gives you a wired handoff, which is the usual way to run your own routing and Wi-Fi.

Does the port work on battery or USB-C power?

Yes. The data and power paths are separate, so the power source does not change what the port does.
