Quick Answer / Summary: Wire the 3.5 mm tip to pin 2 (hot), the sleeve to pin 1 (ground), and tie pin 3 to sleeve in the standard dual-mono build. Set the XLR input to line mode and keep +48V phantom disabled while the 3.5 mm source is connected. For a stereo source, split the tip to one XLR’s pin 2 and the ring to a second XLR’s pin 2 across two male ends.
XLR male to 3.5 mm names the XLR end first: a cable with a 3-pin male XLR plug on one side and a 3.5 mm jack on the other. The male XLR plug inserts into a female XLR input – a recorder, mixer, or interface – which fixes the direction: the 3.5 mm end is where the signal starts, from a player, phone, or line-out source, and the XLR end is where it arrives. This guide covers that direction’s wiring, level matching, and the phantom rule that protects the source.
Direction Check: Who Sends, Who Receives
The male XLR plug is the receiving end of the signal, not the sending end – it goes into an input socket. That means the 3.5 mm end always carries the source: a phone, a media player, an interface line out, or a laptop. If you are trying to do the opposite – send an XLR source to a 3.5 mm target – you need the XLR female to 3.5 mm male cable instead, which is a different physical product. Confusing the two is the most common order error on this keyword.
Wiring: Mono-Sum, Stereo-Split, and the Pin 3 Question
Three wiring variants exist for the 3.5 mm end. Mono-sum: tip and ring both to pin 2, sleeve to pin 1 – correct for mono sources and for collapsing stereo to one channel. Stereo-split: tip to this XLR’s pin 2 and ring to a second XLR’s pin 2, sleeve to both pin 1s – correct when the destination has two inputs. In every case pin 3 ties to pin 1 (sleeve), which presents a clean ground to the input’s balanced circuitry without carrying a second signal.
Input-Side Settings: Line Mode, Gain, Phantom Off
The 3.5 mm source outputs a consumer line level, roughly -10 dBV. The XLR input should be in line mode, which accepts that level directly with a modest gain trim. If the input is locked to mic mode, the line signal overloads the preamp’s first stage and clips – use a -20 dB pad or the input’s line selector. Phantom power stays off for the entire connection; the +48V appears on pins 2 and 3 and passes straight into the 3.5 mm source, which is not built to receive it.
XLR Male to 3.5 mm Build Options
| Build | 3.5 mm End | XLR End | Signal Direction | Best For |
|---|
| Mono dual-mono | Female TS or TRS | Male, single | 3.5 mm source to one XLR input | Player into one recorder channel |
| Stereo split | Female TRS | Male, pair | 3.5 mm stereo to XLR left and right | Stereo source into mixer channels 1-2 |
| Mono TRRS-aware | Female TRRS | Male, single | Phone to XLR input | Phone playback into pro gear |
Real-World Application Scenarios
Podcast studios, where a phone or tablet plays pre-recorded segments into the recorder’s XLR line input. Broadcast playback, where a cue player’s 3.5 mm output reaches a console XLR input for studio reference. Live event backup, where a media player provides emergency audio to a mixer XLR input when the primary source fails. All three are short runs under 3 meters where the wiring and phantom discipline, not the cable length, determine success.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What does XLR male to 3.5 mm mean exactly?
A: A cable with a 3-pin male XLR plug on one end and a 3.5 mm jack on the other. The male XLR plug enters a female XLR input socket, so the 3.5 mm end is the source side – the cable sends a 3.5 mm signal into XLR input equipment.
Q: Can an XLR male to 3.5 mm cable carry a microphone signal?
A: No – the direction is wrong for a microphone. A microphone is XLR male at its own end and plugs directly into the interface’s XLR female input. This cable is for the opposite direction: a 3.5 mm source feeding an XLR input.
Q: Do I need a 3.5 mm to XLR male cable or an XLR male to 3.5 mm cable?
A: They are physically the same cable; the keyword order only indicates which end the search emphasizes. Confirm the direction by the device: if the XLR side is an input socket (three holes), either name is correct for a source-to-input connection.
