XLR to XLR Cable: The Balanced Standard
Three pins, a locking shell and the ability to run a clean signal across a stage. The XLR cable is the backbone of professional audio for good reasons.
Quick Answer
| Pin | Standard wiring | Carries |
|---|
| 1 | Shield or ground | Screen and earth reference |
| 2 | Hot, positive | Signal, in phase |
| 3 | Cold, negative | Signal, inverted |
The two signal conductors carry the same audio with opposite polarity. The receiving equipment subtracts them, which cancels interference picked up along the cable.
Why Balanced Wiring Matters
Noise rejection
Interference affects both conductors equally and is removed at the receiver.
Distance
Balanced lines run for tens of metres cleanly, unlike unbalanced consumer connections.
Phantom power
The same connector carries 48 V to power condenser microphones without a separate supply.
Locking connector
A latch prevents accidental disconnection on stage.
Buying Considerations
- Check the conductor gauge, thicker for longer runs.
- Check the shield type, braided for flexibility and durability.
- Check the connector quality, since the latch and contacts take the wear.
- Choose a length that avoids excess coiled cable on stage.
- Label cables by length for quicker setup.
Real-World Applications
- Microphones to mixing desks.
- Linking processors and outboard gear.
- Studio monitor connections.
- PA systems and stage runs.

FAQ
Does an XLR cable improve sound quality?
It preserves the signal over distance and rejects noise. It does not change the sound itself.
Are all XLR cables balanced?
When wired to the standard, yes. Cheap cables may skip the shield, which defeats the purpose.
Can I use an XLR cable for speakers?
No. Speaker level signals need speaker cable and appropriate connectors.
What length should I buy?
Enough to reach with slack, avoiding excess coiled cable.
