An Aux Cable, Explained: Jack Size, Poles and Uses
An aux is short for auxiliary cable: a two-ended 3.5mm stereo lead that carries an analog audio signal from one device’s output to another device’s input. The name survives from the auxiliary input on car stereos and shelf systems, where the jack sat beside the radio and CD buttons and waited for whatever source you brought along. Nothing about the cable is exotic. What matters is the plug size, the number of conductors inside it, and whether the jack you are plugging into expects a microphone, a line-level signal or headphones.
Quick Answer
An aux cable is a 3.5mm analog audio cable used to send stereo sound from a phone, laptop or player into a car stereo, speaker or amplifier. It carries line-level analog audio only, never video or digital data. The plug comes in three-pole TRS and four-pole TRRS versions.
| Term | Real name | Carries | Typical use |
|---|
| Aux | Auxiliary cable | Stereo line-level audio | Phone to car or speaker |
| 3.5mm jack | 1/8 inch stereo plug | Left and right audio | Headphones, laptop out |
| TRRS vs TRS | 4-pole vs 3-pole | Stereo plus mic vs stereo | Phones vs audio gear |
| Aux port | 3.5mm line in | Line-level input | Car stereo, powered speaker |
What an Aux Cable Actually Carries
An aux lead carries an analog voltage that rises and falls with the audio waveform. Inside the jacket you find two signal conductors plus a shared ground, one per channel. The source does the digital-to-analog conversion, so the cable itself never sees a bit of data. That is why a cheap aux cable can sound fine and why it can also pick up alternator whine in a car: the signal is exposed to whatever electrical noise surrounds it.
Because the signal is line level, roughly one volt, the cable works best over short runs. Two metres is comfortable, five metres usually still works, and anything past that starts to act like an antenna for hum. If you need a long run, the answer is a different output method rather than a longer aux cable.
Three conductors, two channels
A standard stereo aux plug is TRS: tip carries the left channel, ring carries right, and sleeve is ground. That is three metal segments separated by two black insulating bands, which is easy to count with a torch and a fingernail when you are standing in a shop.
TRRS and the microphone pole
A TRRS plug has four segments and adds a fourth conductor for a microphone or a control button. It shows three insulating bands. Phone headsets use this layout, and so do many laptops. Plugging a TRRS headset into a TRS jack usually leaves the mic dead while audio still plays, which is the most common cause of a headset that appears broken.
Where Aux Still Makes Sense Today
Bluetooth is convenient until a room is crowded with other transmitters or a battery is flat. An aux cable has no pairing step, no codec negotiation and no latency you can hear, which is why stage monitors, DJ booths and older car stereos still rely on it. It also works the same way on a 1998 head unit as on a 2026 portable speaker, as long as both ends accept a 3.5mm plug.
The limits are real, though. Aux cannot carry video, cannot pass a digital stream to a home theatre receiver, and cannot charge anything. It also cannot send microphone audio unless the cable is TRRS and both devices agree on the same pole order, which is not guaranteed across brands.
Cars and rental vehicles
The aux input in a car stereo is a line-level input, so it expects a volume-controlled signal. Turn the phone to about 70 percent and let the head unit do the rest; running the phone at full volume adds distortion that no cable can remove.
Buying the Right Aux Lead
Match the plug to the jack and the pole count to the job. A phone or laptop output to a car or speaker needs a plain TRS stereo cable. A wired headset with a microphone needs TRRS on the device end. A cable that runs from a phone into a mixer may need a TRS to dual mono split, which is a different product entirely.
Look for a moulded strain relief rather than a thin rubber boot, and for gold or nickel plating that will not flake. Braided jackets resist tangling but add nothing to sound quality. On a cable this simple, build quality is the whole story.
Real-World Applications
- A driver with a 2012 car stereo but no Bluetooth pairs nothing at all: one aux lead from the phone headphone jack to the dashboard input plays every app in the car.
- A church volunteer feeds a laptop playlist into an older mixing desk through a 3.5mm to dual mono split, avoiding a Bluetooth dropout during a service.
- A student plugs a portable speaker into a laptop for a study session, using a two-metre aux cable that reaches across the desk without an extension.
- A presenter carries a short aux lead in a laptop bag to connect to house sound systems that still offer a 3.5mm input beside the HDMI wall plate.

FAQ
Does an aux cable carry video as well as audio
No. An aux cable carries analog audio only. The 3.5mm connector has no room for a video signal, so a phone to TV connection needs HDMI, USB-C or a casting device instead.
Why does my aux cable only play out of one speaker
Most often the plug is not fully seated, or the plug is TRS and the jack is a four-pole TRRS socket wired for a different pole order. Push the plug in fully, then try a second cable before blaming the device.
Is a 3.5mm cable the same as an aux cable
In everyday use, yes. Aux describes the job, 3.5mm describes the connector. A 3.5mm stereo cable used between a phone and a car stereo is an aux cable; the same cable used for headphones is a headphone cable.
Can I plug a microphone into an aux input
Not usefully. An aux input expects line level, which is far stronger than a microphone signal, and it supplies no bias voltage. You will hear a very quiet, noisy result. A mic needs a preamp or an interface.
