USB 3.0 Port Colour: Convention, Not Standard
Blue means fast, yellow means charging, and neither is written into any specification. Manufacturers adopted the colours voluntarily, and they abandoned them just as freely.
Quick Answer
Blue is the most common USB 3.0 convention, teal is often used for 10 Gbps, and yellow, orange or red usually indicate charging behaviour rather than speed. Black and white typically mean USB 2.0. None of this is standardised, so treat colour as a hint and confirm the version with a printed marking or by reading the negotiated speed in software.
Common Colour Conventions
| Colour | Common meaning | Standard | Reliability |
|---|
| Black or white | USB 2.0 | Convention | Medium |
| Blue | USB 3.0, 5 Gbps | Convention | Medium to high in practice |
| Teal or cyan | USB 3.1, 10 Gbps | Convention | Low to medium |
| Yellow | Charging while the machine is off | Vendor specific | Low, no speed meaning |
| Orange | Always on charging | Vendor specific | Low |
| Red | Sleep and charge, or high current | Vendor specific | Low |
| Purple or green | Keyboard and mouse ports | Vendor specific | Low, legacy |
Why Colour Is Unreliable
No specification
The USB Implementers Forum defines logos and markings, not plastic colours. Vendors use colour as a marketing shorthand.
Inconsistent adoption
Laptops frequently ship with all black ports regardless of version, especially where space is tight.
Colour used for charging
Yellow and red ports are about power behaviour, so a fast looking port may still be a USB 2.0 data port.
USB-C has no colour at all
Every USB-C port looks identical, and the colour of the plastic insert says nothing about data rate.
What to Check Instead
- Look for the SS trident logo or an SS10 marking.
- Read the system specification or manual for the port list.
- Connect a known USB 3.0 device and read the negotiated rate.
- Inspect the USB-A socket interior for the extra four contacts.
- Keep a labelled note of which ports are fast on your own machine.
Real-World Applications
- Choosing the right port for a fast external drive.
- Explaining why a yellow port charges but transfers slowly.
- Mapping docking stations where only one port is high speed.
- Advising users without relying on colour alone.

FAQ
Is a blue port always USB 3.0?
Usually, since blue became the de facto SuperSpeed colour, but exceptions exist and it is not a standard.
What does a yellow USB port mean?
It supplies power while the computer is off. It says nothing about data speed.
Why are all my laptop ports black?
Colour marking is optional. Many laptops omit it entirely to keep the chassis uniform.
Is teal really 10 Gbps?
It is a common convention for the faster tier, but some vendors use teal for 5 Gbps ports as well.
