A USB 3.0 female connector is the receptacle half of the interface, and female tells you the gender but not much more. Two parts sold under the same description can still differ in interface family, contact count, body height, and mounting style, and that gap is where wrong-part orders come from. This guide breaks the female side into the types you will be quoted, shows how each mounting option changes the part number, and lists the checks that keep a panel build on schedule.
Quick answer: For a USB 3.0 female connector, specify four attributes. Interface family: Standard-A, Standard-B, Micro-B, or Powered-B. Contact count: 9 for Standard-A and Standard-B, 10 for Micro-B, 11 for Powered-B. Mounting: PCB vertical, PCB right-angle, panel-mount, or bulkhead. Termination: through-hole, surface-mount, or screw terminals. A female receptacle is the fixed port, while a female-to-female adapter is a separate inline part that joins two male cable ends. Confirm all four attributes and the part is correct.
USB 3.0 Female Connector: Receptacle Types and Mounting Options
Female is a gender, not a specification. A USB 3.0 female connector is the receptacle that stays with the equipment and accepts a male plug, but the same two words cover parts as different as a right-angle board jack and a nut-locked bulkhead port. Buyers who order on gender alone discover the difference at assembly, when the part does not fit the cutout, the land pattern, or the enclosure. Working through interface family, contact count, and mounting style in that order removes the ambiguity.
Female, Receptacle and Jack: One Part, Three Names
USB documentation says receptacle, as this overview of the USB 3.0 jack connector explains. Trade language says jack, socket, or female. All three describe the fixed half of the mating pair. The male side is the plug, which travels on the cable or, less often, mounts directly on a board as a male header. Keep the words consistent in a bill of materials, because a line item that reads only USB 3.0 female connector can be filled three legitimate ways and still be wrong for your build.
USB 3.0, or SuperSpeed USB, runs at 5 Gbps, provides up to 900 mA at 5 V, and adds full-duplex SuperSpeed lanes to the original USB 2.0 pair. On a female receptacle, that means extra contacts inside the shell: nine on Standard-A and Standard-B where a 2.0 part had four.
The Female Connector Types You Will Be Quoted
Four receptacle families dominate quotations in this category.
- Standard-A female: the familiar host port for panels, hubs, chargers, and kiosks. Nine contacts, blue insert on most 3.0 parts.
- Standard-B female: the device-side port on docks, printers, and instruments. Nine contacts, a taller body than 2.0 B, and it still accepts a 2.0 B plug.
- Micro-B female: ten contacts in a compact, two-section opening for cameras, drives, and handheld instruments. It accepts a 2.0 Micro-B plug.
- Powered-B female: eleven contacts, adding two PRCD pins for higher bus power on portable drive designs. Availability is limited, so plan lead time.
Contact Counts and What They Tell You
Contact count is the fastest way to check that a quoted part is genuinely SuperSpeed and not a 2.0 body with a 3.0 label.
| Receptacle family | Contacts | Mating plug | Notes for buyers |
|---|
| Standard-A female | 9 | Standard-A male (3.0 or 2.0) | Blue insert convention; not footprint-compatible with 2.0 A |
| Standard-B female | 9 | Standard-B male (3.0 or 2.0) | Upstream port on hubs, docks and monitors |
| Micro-B female | 10 | Micro-B male (3.0 or 2.0 Micro-B) | 2.0 Micro-B plugs fit; the reverse is not true |
| Powered-B female | 11 | Powered-B male | PRCD pins add bus power; rare part, longer lead time |
A tenth contact appears on Micro-B because the wider SuperSpeed section adds its own shell-related pin alongside the SuperSpeed lanes. If a supplier describes a Micro-B female as 9-pin, treat the description as inaccurate and ask for the drawing.
Mounting Options for Female Receptacles
Mounting is where most of the real design decisions live, because it controls assembly method and service access.
- PCB vertical: a USB 3.0 vertical connector takes the plug perpendicular to the board, saving panel space and suiting top-entry cable routing.
- PCB right-angle: the plug runs parallel to the board, the standard rear-panel arrangement.
- Panel-mount and bulkhead: a USB 3.0 bulkhead connector passes through a chassis wall and locks with hardware, creating an external, replaceable port.
- Surface-mount versus through-hole: surface-mount speeds automated assembly, while through-hole withstands higher insertion force and mechanical abuse.
Each option changes total height above the board and the panel opening, so request both the PCB footprint and the panel cutout drawing. When the port must be sealed or strain-relieved, an industrial variant with a locked or shrouded shell is usually the safer specification.
Which Questions Buyers Ask About Female Receptacles
Is a female connector the same as a jack? Yes. Jack, socket, and receptacle all mean the female side. The useful follow-up question is which family and which mounting style, not which synonym the quote uses.
Can a USB 2.0 plug go into a 3.0 female connector? Yes, within the same family. The legacy contacts sit in their original positions, so a 2.0 plug mates and negotiates at 2.0 speed. In Micro-B the rule is one-way: a 3.0 Micro-B receptacle accepts a 2.0 Micro-B plug, while a 2.0 Micro-B receptacle will not accept the wider 3.0 Micro-B plug.
How much current can a 3.0 female connector carry? The standard allows up to 900 mA at 5 V per port, against 500 mA for USB 2.0. Current delivered in practice depends on the host controller and the trace design feeding the receptacle, so a 900 mA rating on the connector does not guarantee 900 mA at the port.
Three Builds and the Female Connector They Use
- Control cabinet front panel. A panel builder uses Standard-A right-angle female receptacles so programming cables connect without opening the door. Lock the footprint and the cutout drawing first, because mixed suppliers ship slightly different heights that throw off a drilled panel.
- Portable field instrument. A Micro-B female receptacle keeps the port small and supports 3.0 speeds to a laptop for data offload. Confirm the two-section opening and ask for the retention force, since field cables are pulled and cycled far more than office cables.
- Wall-mount media kiosk. A bulkhead female receptacle provides a replaceable external port on a sealed enclosure. Selection should prioritize shell locking, sealing method, and cable strain relief over the lowest unit cost, because a failed port means a service call.
Female-to-Female Adapters Are Not Receptacles
A female-to-female adapter is a coupler with two female ends, used to join two male cable assemblies or extend a run. It is a different product from the board or panel receptacle, and it shares none of the mounting considerations. When a specification mixes the two terms, split the line item into an adapter and a receptacle so purchasing does not substitute one for the other. Adapters also add a connection point, and every extra connection costs insertion loss at SuperSpeed, where the practical passive limit is about 3 m compared with about 5 m for USB 2.0.
Sourcing Checklist for Female Receptacles
- State the interface family and the mating plug your users will actually insert.
- Confirm the contact count from a pinout drawing rather than a marketing description.
- Choose the mounting style and termination method for your assembly line.
- Request PCB footprint, body height, and panel cutout dimensions together.
- Decide whether a standard body or a locked, industrial variant is required.
- Confirm the USB 3.0 current expectation and the trace design behind the port.
- Verify availability, especially for Powered-B and sealed variants.
- Ask for sample units to test mate and unmate cycles before volume release.
Final Checks Before Release
The female side of a USB 3.0 link is easy to specify correctly once the sequence is fixed: family first, contacts second, mounting third, then termination, sealing, and current. Most failures in this category trace back to a quote written from a photo or a single word. Put the four attributes on the drawing, keep adapter and receptacle line items separate, and the port you receive will match the port you designed.
FAQ
1. Is a USB 3.0 female connector the same as a jack?
Yes. Jack, socket, and receptacle all describe the female side of the interface, the fixed port that stays with the equipment. The word female only tells you the gender. The attributes that decide whether a part fits are interface family, contact count, mounting style, and termination method, so always specify those four in addition to the gender.
2. How many pins does a USB 3.0 female connector have?
Standard-A and Standard-B female receptacles have 9 contacts: the four original USB 2.0 positions plus five SuperSpeed contacts. Micro-B female receptacles have 10 contacts because of their wider two-section body, and Powered-B receptacles have 11, adding two PRCD pins for extra bus power. USB 2.0 receptacles of the same family have only 4 contacts.
3. Can a USB 3.0 female connector be mounted on a panel?
Yes. Panel-mount and bulkhead female receptacles pass through a chassis wall and lock with a nut or screws, creating a replaceable external port. They are common on cabinets, kiosks, and sealed enclosures. Specify the panel cutout, wall thickness range, and sealing requirement, because a standard board receptacle cannot be substituted for a bulkhead part without a redesign.
4. What is the difference between a female connector and a female-to-female adapter?
A female connector is the fixed receptacle mounted on a board, panel, or enclosure. A female-to-female adapter is a short coupler with two female ends that joins two male cable assemblies or extends an existing run. They are different products with different mounting considerations, so keep them as separate line items. Each extra adapter connection also adds insertion loss to a SuperSpeed link.
5. Does a USB 3.0 Micro-B female accept a USB 2.0 Micro-B plug?
Yes. A 3.0 Micro-B receptacle accepts a 2.0 Micro-B plug, and the link runs at 2.0 speed. The reverse does not work: the wider two-section 3.0 Micro-B plug will not enter a 2.0 Micro-B receptacle. If your product base still uses 2.0 Micro-B cables, the 3.0 Micro-B receptacle is the compatible choice for a new design.
