USB 3.0 A-to-B Cabling: Nine Contacts Into the Taller B Port
When a USB 3.0 device is dropping to 480 Mbps, the cable is a frequent cause. A USB 3.0 A-to-B cable is a specific assembly: nine contacts at the A end and a taller nine-contact B plug at the device. Knowing that shape and contact count lets a buyer confirm the part without opening the packaging.
Quick Answer / Summary
A USB 3.0 A-to-B cable carries SuperSpeed signaling at 5 Gbps on nine contacts. The A end looks like a standard Type-A plug, but the B end uses a taller housing that will not fit a USB 2.0 square B socket. Passive reach is about 3 meters. It is backward compatible with 2.0 devices at 480 Mbps when a socket accepts it.
Nine Contacts and What They Do
The SuperSpeed build adds two shielded differential pairs and an additional ground to the standard four-contact set. Those extra pairs carry the 5 Gbps SuperSpeed lanes in both directions, while the original pair remains available for backward-compatible 480 Mbps operation.
Because the added pairs are separate, a SuperSpeed cable can serve a 2.0 device without renegotiation of the physical layer. The device simply uses the older pair. That is why the generation shows up as a speed ceiling rather than a hard incompatibility.
How SuperSpeed Moves Data
SuperSpeed uses separate transmit and receive pairs, so a link can move data both ways at once. The protocol also employs packet-level flow control, and storage devices commonly use UASP to reduce command overhead compared with the older mass-storage transport.
Compatible Devices for a 3.0 B Socket
Desktop printers, flatbed and document scanners, external drive enclosures, audio interfaces, and laboratory instruments are the common residents of a 3.0 B port. The device itself must be a USB 3.0 design for the taller socket to be present.
If the device is a 3.0 unit, the cable must match on both ends to unlock 5 Gbps. A 2.0 cable in that path will physically fit the A side but cannot carry the SuperSpeed pairs, so the device negotiates down to 480 Mbps.
- Document scanners that push large page files.
- External drive docks and single-disk enclosures.
- Audio interfaces with multichannel capture.
- Instrumentation that streams sampled data.
Signs Your Link Dropped to High-Speed
A throughput ceiling near 480 Mbps, a long transfer that looks like a 2.0 workload, or a device utility reporting High-Speed rather than SuperSpeed all point to a 2.0 cable or 2.0 socket in the path. Swap the cable first, because that is the cheapest variable to test.
How It Differs From a 2.0 A-B Cable
Three differences decide the purchase. The connector housing at the B end is taller. The contact count rises from four to nine. The supported throughput rises from 480 Mbps to 5 Gbps. None of these are cosmetic, and none can be added later by an adapter.
Length also changes with generation. The SuperSpeed budget is about 3 meters for passive copper, against about 5 meters for High-Speed. A cable sold at a long length and described as USB 3.0 is worth checking, because passive SuperSpeed does not hold much beyond the 3 meter figure.
Current and Power Differences
USB 3.0 raises the unit load to 900 mA from the 500 mA defined for USB 2.0. A 3.0 device that draws near the higher figure needs both a 3.0 port and a cable with adequate conductors, otherwise voltage drop will cause dropouts under load.
Selecting and Testing the Part
Confirm four items before ordering: the B socket shape, the device generation, the required length, and the current draw. With those four settled, the part number is unambiguous. A nine-contact assembly covers both 3.0 and 2.0 devices when the socket permits.
On receipt, a quick visual check of the B housing and a host utility reading of the negotiated speed confirms the cable in under a minute. Catching a mismatched part at the bench is far cheaper than finding it during a deployment.
Spares Planning
Keep one spare 3.0 A-to-B cable per ten deployed devices. SuperSpeed assemblies are the parts most often substituted by mistake, so a labeled spare bin prevents a technician from installing an older four-contact cable during a service call.

Practical Application Scenarios
- A document scanning station uses a nine-contact A-to-B cable so full-page color batches move at 5 Gbps instead of stalling at 480 Mbps.
- A studio installs a USB 3.0 A-to-B cable between an audio interface and a workstation to carry multichannel capture without dropouts.
- A procurement clause requires the taller B housing on all new scanner orders so 2.0 cables cannot be substituted during maintenance.
- A workstation upgrade adds a 5 Gbps host port and the existing 2.0 printer cable is swapped for a nine-contact A-to-B part.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a USB 3.0 A-to-B cable work with a USB 2.0 device?
Only if the device socket accepts the taller 3.0 B plug. When it fits, the link runs at 480 Mbps using the backward-compatible pair.
How long can a passive USB 3.0 A-to-B cable be?
About 3 meters. SuperSpeed signaling has a tighter passive budget than High-Speed, which is why 2.0 links reach about 5 meters.
Why is my 3.0 device only reaching 480 Mbps?
A four-contact cable, a 2.0 host port, or a 2.0 hub in the path will cap the link. Test with a nine-contact cable in a known 3.0 port first.
Does the cable need to support 900 mA?
If the device draws bus power near the 3.0 unit load, yes. Choose a build with adequate conductors to hold voltage under load.
