Quick Answer / Summary: A subwoofer cable is a single shielded RCA interconnect carrying the mono LFE/bass channel from the receiver’s SUB OUT to the subwoofer’s LFE input, at line level. Use a cable built as 75-ohm coax with foil plus braid shielding to reject hum and RF pickup over long runs. Keep it away from power cords and connect it before powering the sub.
The subwoofer cable carries one specific signal: the low-frequency effects and bass-management channel from a receiver’s SUB OUT to the sub’s LFE input. It is a single-channel, shielded, line-level interconnect – not speaker wire, not a digital cable, and not interchangeable with a random RCA pair even though the plug is the same. This guide covers what the cable is, why coaxial shielding matters at low frequencies, and how to map, run, and troubleshoot it.
What the Cable Carries: One Channel, Line Level
The signal is the LFE channel plus any bass-managed low frequencies the receiver redirects from the main channels – summed to a single mono line-level signal, typically around -10 dBV. That means two things for the cable. First, it needs only one connector at each end, because there is nothing stereo to carry. Second, it must not be speaker wire: the sub’s RCA input expects a voltage signal, not an amplified output, so a speaker-level connection requires the sub’s high-level input terminals instead of the RCA jack.
Why Shielding Matters at Low Frequencies
Bass content is low frequency, but the interference that pollutes it is not. Mains hum at 50/60 Hz and its harmonics sit right inside the audible bass range, and the long runs typical of subwoofer installations – across a room, along a wall – act as antennas for exactly those fields. A cable built as true 75-ohm coax with foil plus braided shielding keeps the ground reference continuous and rejects the pickup; an unshielded or lightly shielded audio RCA delivers audibly buzzing bass, which is the most common subwoofer complaint. The fix is almost never the sub or the receiver – it is the cable’s shield coverage and routing.
Mapping, Running, and Connecting
The connection is SUB OUT (or LFE OUT) on the receiver to LFE IN (or LINE IN) on the subwoofer – one RCA at each end, no adapter needed. Route the cable away from power cords and transformers, crossing them at right angles where unavoidable, and leave slack at the sub end for repositioning. Connect the cable before powering the sub, then run the receiver’s level calibration so the sub’s input gain matches the output. If hum appears, first re-route the cable away from power, then check for a ground loop between the receiver and the sub’s mains connection.
Subwoofer Cable Reference
| Attribute | Specification | Why It Matters |
|---|
| Channels | 1 (mono LFE / bass) | Bass is summed; a stereo pair is unnecessary |
| Signal level | Line level, about -10 dBV | Feeds the sub’s RCA input, not speaker terminals |
| Construction | 75-ohm coax, foil plus braid | Hum and RF rejection over long runs |
| Connectors | 1 RCA per end | SUB OUT to LFE IN, color irrelevant |
| Routing | Away from power cords | Parallel runs couple mains hum into the shield |
Real-World Application Scenarios
Home theater bass: receiver SUB OUT to powered sub’s LFE input, the canonical use. Multi-sub setups where each sub gets its own single-channel run from the receiver’s multiple sub outputs. Rack installations where long interconnects cross the room and shield coverage decides whether the bass is silent or buzzing. AVR calibration sessions where the cable is connected once and the level set at the sub’s gain control.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Do I need a special subwoofer cable or will any RCA work?
A: Any single shielded RCA with good coverage works electrically, but a cable built as 75-ohm coax with foil plus braid shielding is what keeps long runs free of hum. A stereo RCA pair is unnecessary – the LFE channel is mono, so only one connector is used.
Q: Is a subwoofer cable the same as speaker wire?
A: No. The subwoofer cable carries a line-level signal to the sub’s RCA input. Speaker wire carries amplified signal to passive speaker terminals. Speaker wire into an RCA input risks damage and gives no sound; the sub’s high-level input is the correct path for speaker-level signals.
Q: Why does my subwoofer hum with the cable connected?
A: Usually one of two causes: the cable runs parallel to a power cord and picks up mains hum, or there is a ground loop between the receiver and the sub’s mains connection. Re-route the cable first; if hum persists, move the sub to the same outlet strip as the receiver or use a ground-isolation solution.
