SATA Power Extension Cable: Current, Rails and Reach
Power supplies ship with a fixed set of SATA power connectors, and they are always a few centimetres short of where the last drive ends up. Extending is easy, but the current budget is what decides whether it works.
Quick Answer
A SATA power extension cable passes the three rails, 3.3, 5 and 12 V, plus grounds, from the power supply to a drive. Extend it freely in terms of length, since power is not length sensitive in the way data is. The limit is current: a 3.5 inch drive draws a high surge on the 12 V rail at spin up, so several drives sharing one extension can brown out. Count the drives before extending.
What the Cable Carries
| Rail | Voltage | Used by | Note |
|---|
| 3.3 V | 3.3 V | Rarely used, legacy | Often not connected on modern drives |
| 5 V | 5 V | Drive electronics and 2.5 inch drives | Low current steady draw |
| 12 V | 12 V | Motor and actuator on 3.5 inch drives | High surge at spin up |
| Grounds | 0 V | Return path | Multiple contacts reduce resistance |
Current Budget
| Drive type | Typical idle power | Spin up surge on 12 V |
|---|
| 2.5 inch SSD | Under 3 W | Negligible, no motor |
| 2.5 inch hard drive | 1 to 2 W | Around 1 A on 5 V |
| 3.5 inch hard drive | 4 to 7 W | 1.5 to 2 A on 12 V |
| Optical drive | 2 to 5 W | Small surge at spin up |
Why Spin Up Failures Happen
Simultaneous start
Every drive starting at once multiplies the surge. A single extension run to four mechanical drives is a common cause of drives that occasionally go missing at boot.
Thin conductors
Cheap extension cable uses thin wire, adding resistance exactly where the current is highest.
Contact resistance
Each mating pair adds a small resistance. Two extensions double it.
Supply limits
A power supply near its rating on the 12 V rail will dip under simultaneous surge.
Practical Guidance
- Count the drives that will share the extension.
- Keep mechanical drives on separate runs where possible.
- Prefer one extension to two chained together.
- Choose cable with visible gauge information.
- Test with all drives connected and every drive recognised at boot.
Real-World Applications
- Adding a third or fourth drive to a case.
- Reaching a drive mounted at the front of a large chassis.
- Powering a hot swap caddy from a fixed supply.
- Bench work outside the case.

FAQ
Can I extend SATA power as far as I like?
Length is not the limiting factor, but resistance rises with thin cable. Keep runs reasonable and the conductors adequate.
Why do my drives sometimes not appear at boot?
Usually a 12 V surge problem when several mechanical drives start at the same time on one run.
Is it safe to chain two power extensions?
It works, but each joint adds resistance. One extension is safer.
Do SSDs need the 12 V rail?
No. 2.5 inch SSDs run from 5 V only, which is why they place almost no load on the 12 V side.
