Quick Answer / Summary: Optical cables are protective cable assemblies containing one or more optical fibers that transmit data, video, or sensing signals as pulses of light. Available in single-mode glass for long-haul telecom and plastic optical fiber (POF) for short automotive/audio links, they provide total immunity to electromagnetic interference.
Across modern telecommunications networks, industrial laser manufacturing, medical endoscopic imaging, and aerospace avionics, optical cables provide the ruggedized protective physical assemblies housing fragile optical glass and polymer fibers. Engineering high-performance optical cables requires balancing optical core transmission physics with complex mechanical protection—including water-swellable aramid strength yarns (Kevlar), corrugated steel armor (CST), flame-retardant polymers, and precision optical connector terminations.
Structural Architecture of Professional Optical Cables
Why mechanical packaging determines optical longevity in demanding industrial environments: 1. Core and Cladding Glass Packaging: At the center of an optical cable sits the delicate 125-micron glass fiber; to shield this glass from axial tensile stress during installation, high-tensile aramid yarns (Kevlar) are helically stranded around the buffer tubes; aramid yarns provide extraordinary tensile strength (withstanding pulling forces over 600 lbs / 2,700 N) without adding heavy metallic weight; 2. Loose-Tube Outdoor vs. Tight-Buffered Indoor Architecture: Outdoor optical cables utilize loose-tube construction, where fibers float within gel-filled PBT plastic buffer tubes; the gel blocks moisture ingress and allows the glass to expand and contract freely across extreme outdoor temperatures (-40°C to +70°C) without micro-bending; indoor cables utilize 900μm tight-buffered thermoplastic coatings that allow direct termination with field connectors inside telecommunications closets; 3. Armoring and Rodent Resistance: For direct-burial underground trenches and industrial plant floors, optical cables incorporate an inner jacket surrounded by a longitudinally corrugated electrolytic chrome-coated steel tape (CST) armor and a rugged high-density polyethylene (HDPE) outer sheath, rendering the cable crush-resistant and immune to rodent gnawing.
Glass Optical Fiber (GOF) vs. Plastic Optical Fiber (POF)
Glass optical fiber delivers low attenuation (< 0.35 dB/km) over kilometers; Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) utilizes a large 1mm PMMA acrylic core with high attenuation (~150 dB/km), widely deployed in consumer digital audio (Toslink) and automotive MOST infotainment networks under 50 meters.
Active Optical Cables (AOC) in AV and IT
Active Optical Cables incorporate miniature electro-optical transceivers permanently embedded inside the connector hoods (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, QSFP), converting electrical signals to light for lossless 48Gbps video transmission over 100 meters.
Flame Retardancy Ratings: OFNR (Riser) vs. OFNP (Plenum)
Indoor optical cables must comply with National Electrical Code fire safety standards: OFNR (Optical Fiber Non-Conductive Riser) prevents vertical flame propagation in building elevator shafts; OFNP (Plenum) utilizes low-smoke fluoropolymer jackets for air-handling drop-ceiling spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can optical cables bend at sharp 90-degree angles?
A: Standard optical fiber requires a bend radius of at least 10 to 20 times the cable diameter to prevent light leakage; however, modern bend-insensitive fibers (ITU-T G.657 standards) incorporate special refractive trenches that allow tight bends down to 7.5mm with zero signal loss.
Q: What is an Active Optical Cable (AOC)?
A: An AOC cable looks like a standard HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB cable, but contains microscopic laser diodes and optical receivers inside the connector heads; it converts electrical signals into light pulses, allowing ultra-high bandwidth (48 Gbps) over 50-100 meters without signal degradation.
