Quick Answer / Summary: An LC UPC to LC UPC patch cord features small form-factor LC connectors with Ultra Physical Contact (UPC) polished ferrules on both ends. Characterized by blue connector housings (for singlemode OS2) or aqua/violet housings (for multimode OM3/OM4), it features a dome-shaped end-face polish delivering ≥50dB return loss (singlemode) and low insertion loss (≤0.2dB), serving as the universal standard for digital Ethernet transceivers.
In enterprise data centers, cloud server clusters, and telecommunications central offices, duplex LC patch cables dominate high-speed networking. When connecting modern SFP+, SFP28, and QSFP transceivers, specifying an lc upc lc upc patch cable ensures optimal physical contact across microscopic 9µm singlemode or 50µm multimode glass cores, minimizing signal reflection and maximizing channel throughput.
UPC End-Face Geometry and Optical Contact Physics
Understanding the Ultra Physical Contact (UPC) polish: 1. Dome-Shaped Curvature: UPC ferrules are machine-polished with a slight convex spherical radius (10mm to 25mm). When two LC connectors mate inside an alignment sleeve, the spring-loaded ceramic tips touch first at the exact center where the optical glass core resides; 2. Physical Compression Eliminates Air Gaps: Under standardized mechanical spring tension, the silica glass cores compress slightly against each other, completely eliminating Fresnel reflection caused by glass-to-air refractive index mismatches; 3. Optical Performance Limits: UPC delivers exceptional back-reflection reduction, achieving optical return loss (RL) greater than 50dB on singlemode glass and ≥35dB on multimode glass, preventing optical feedback into transceiver laser cavities.
UPC vs. APC Polish Comparison
While UPC features a flat/domed end-face (0-degree angle, blue), APC features an 8-degree angled end-face (green) that reflects stray light into the cladding. UPC is the mandated standard for digital Ethernet switching (10G/25G/100G SFP transceivers), whereas APC is reserved for analog RF video and FTTH WDM systems.
IEC 61300-3-35 End-Face Cleanliness Standards
Even a microscopic 1µm dust particle on a UPC core causes permanent pitting and severe insertion loss under laser power; inspecting and cleaning with dry click-cleaners prior to mating is mandatory.
High-Density Duplex Patching Mechanics
Utilizing compact 1.25mm ceramic ferrules, LC UPC duplex jumpers enable up to 48 duplex links (96 fibers) in a single 1U rackmount panel, supporting spine-leaf switch architectures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What does UPC stand for in fiber optic cabling?
A: UPC stands for Ultra Physical Contact; it describes an advanced machine polishing process that produces a domed end-face, allowing glass cores to touch directly without air gaps to achieve return loss ≥50dB.
Q: Can I connect an LC/UPC patch cable to an LC/APC port?
A: No; mating a domed UPC connector (0° angle) with an angled APC connector (8° angle) creates a destructive physical air gap and permanently crushes the ceramic ferrules; never intermate UPC and APC connectors.
