Quick Answer / Summary: A LAN cable Cat 6a (Category 6 Augmented local area network cable) is an 8-conductor twisted-pair copper cable rated for frequencies up to 500 MHz, engineered to deliver full 10 Gbps (10GBASE-T) throughput up to 100 meters (328 feet). Featuring 23 AWG solid copper conductors, internal cross-pair splines, and optional aluminum foil shielding (F/UTP), it eliminates Alien Crosstalk and supports up to 90W IEEE 802.3bt PoE++ power.
In commercial structured cabling, local area networks (LANs), and high-performance workstation environments, bandwidth demands are accelerating exponentially. Deploying a certified lan cable cat 6a provides organizations with the high-speed copper backbone necessary to support 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-T), Wi-Fi 7 wireless access points, and high-power PoE++ hardware across the full 100-meter channel.
High-Performance Physical Architecture of Cat 6a LAN Cables
Cat 6a LAN cables incorporate advanced physical layer engineering: 1. 23 AWG Pure Solid Copper Conductors: Unlike inferior copper-clad aluminum (CCA), authentic Cat 6a cables utilize 100% bare oxygen-free copper with thicker 23 AWG diameter, significantly reducing loop resistance and signal attenuation; 2. 500 MHz Electrical Testing: Operating at double the frequency of standard Cat6 (250 MHz), Cat 6a ensures sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for complex 16-level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM16) used in 10GBASE-T; 3. Internal Pair Isolation (Spline / Cross-Web): A central polyethylene cross-filler separates the four twisted pairs throughout the entire cable length, minimizing internal near-end crosstalk (NEXT); 4. High-Power PoE++ Capability: Thicker copper conductors dissipate heat efficiently, enabling dense cable bundles to safely support 60W (PoE+ Type 3) and 90W (PoE++ Type 4) power delivery to pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) IP cameras and smart building LED lighting.
T568A vs. T568B RJ45 Termination Pinouts
Cat 6a LAN cables follow standardized RJ45 color codes; T568B is the universal commercial standard in the United States, while T568A is preferred in residential and government installations; pinouts must remain consistent at both ends.
Shielded (F/UTP) vs. Unshielded (U/UTP) LAN Infrastructure
Shielded Cat 6a incorporates an overall aluminum Mylar foil screen and a tinned copper drain wire, providing absolute immunity against external electromagnetic interference in industrial and medical LAN environments.
Permanent Link vs. Channel Certification (ANSI/TIA-568.2-D)
Under TIA standards, a horizontal permanent link (solid cable between patch panel and wall jack) can extend up to 90 meters, allowing up to 10 meters of stranded patch cables for a certified 100-meter total channel.
