The JUSB3 connector is not a different interface; it is one vendor’s silkscreen name for the 19/20-pin internal USB 3.0 header found on modern motherboards. Because the label changes from board to board while the signal set does not, builders and integrators waste time hunting for the wrong part. This guide explains what JUSB3 means, how it relates to the generic USB 3.0 internal header, how the two ports are wired across nineteen contacts, and how to fault-find a front-panel cable that will not deliver full SuperSpeed speed.
Quick answer: Treat JUSB3 as a standard 2.00 mm pitch 19/20-pin USB 3.0 internal header. It feeds two front-panel ports from one keyed plug, so seat the keyed position over the missing pin, press straight down and confirm the shell is flush. If the ports enumerate but transfer slowly, the SuperSpeed conductors are missing or the plug is partly seated. The label changes by vendor; the pinout does not.
JUSB3 Connector: Motherboard Internal Header Wiring Explained
Motherboard silkscreens are written for the assembly line, not for the integrator. A port that one vendor calls JUSB3, another calls F_USB30 and a third calls USB3_1 is the same electrical interface in all three cases. Understanding the naming convention saves a purchase order and, more importantly, prevents someone from plugging a 2.00 mm 19-pin harness into a 2.54 mm 9-pin header with a screwdriver and hope.
What JUSB3 Means on a Motherboard
On the boards that use this naming scheme, the internal USB headers are numbered in sequence. The legacy 9-pin USB 2.0 headers take the early numbers, commonly JUSB1 and JUSB2, each carrying two USB 2.0 ports on a 2.54 mm pitch body with a keyed missing pin. Once the board adds SuperSpeed front-panel support, the next header in the sequence becomes JUSB3, and it is the USB 3.0 internal header with 19 populated pins on a 20-position, 2.00 mm pitch body. Some boards then continue with JUSB4, JUSB5 and so on, which may be additional 2.0 headers or additional 3.0 headers depending on the model.
The practical rule is that the number identifies the connector instance, not the generation. Always confirm the generation by looking at the housing: a 2.00 mm two-row, ten-position body with one position absent is a USB 3.0 header, while a 2.54 mm two-row body with nine contacts is a USB 2.0 header.
Pinout of the JUSB3 Header
The header carries two complete downstream ports. Port 1 occupies one row, port 2 mirrors it on the opposite row, and the shared drain return keeps the SuperSpeed pairs isolated from the 2.0 data lines.
| Pin | Signal | Function |
|---|
| 1 | VBUS | 5 V bus power, up to 900 mA |
| 2 | D- | USB 2.0 differential pair, negative |
| 3 | D+ | USB 2.0 differential pair, positive |
| 4 | GND | Power and 2.0 return |
| 5 | SSRX- | SuperSpeed receive, negative |
| 6 | SSRX+ | SuperSpeed receive, positive |
| 7 | GND_DRAIN | Dedicated SuperSpeed return path |
| 8 | SSTX- | SuperSpeed transmit, negative |
| 9 | SSTX+ | SuperSpeed transmit, positive |
| Key | Absent contact | Polarizes the plug; no electrical function |
The same nine signals repeat for the second port on the mirrored row, with a ground pin added and the keyed position completing the ten-position body. Because nineteen contacts and one key occupy twenty positions, an off-by-one error is impossible if the plug is oriented correctly and impossible to fix if it is forced.
Naming Across Vendors: The Same Header, Different Ink
| Vendor naming style | Typical silkscreen | What it denotes |
|---|
| Sequential J-name | JUSB3 | USB 3.0 internal header, 19/20-pin, 2.00 mm |
| Function-prefixed | F_USB30 | Front-panel USB 3.0 header, same signal set |
| Port-numbered | USB3_1, USB3_2 | Additional USB 3.0 headers, same signal set |
| Legacy 2.0 | JUSB1, JUSB2 | USB 2.0 headers, 9-pin, 2.54 mm, not interchangeable |
Because the silkscreen is cosmetic, the reliable identification method is mechanical: count the positions and measure the pitch. That check is also the fastest way to tell a 3.0 header from a 2.0 header on a board that uses two-digit numbering for both. The contact arrangement itself is the same standard set described in the USB 3.0 contacts reference, and the mating cable is the one covered by the case USB 3.0 connector assembly guide.
What Buyers Ask: How Do I Wire a Panel to a JUSB3 Header?
The common question is whether a given front-panel harness can be used on a board whose silkscreen says JUSB3. Electrically, yes, provided the harness plug is a compliant 2.00 mm 19/20-pin USB 3.0 plug with the correct key position. The two genuine risks are the connector body height, since a tall plug may not clear a graphics card installed directly above the header, and the cable length, because front-panel harnesses run long and the passive SuperSpeed budget is only about 3 m.
Ask suppliers to confirm the plug pitch, the key position, the housing height and the wire gauge. A harness that meets all four numbers will mate and will keep both ports at 5 Gbps.
Three Real Cases
- White-box system integration. A board with JUSB1, JUSB2 and JUSB3 headers needs one front-panel harness on JUSB3 and two 2.0 harnesses on the other two. Labelling the harness ends before assembly prevents the classic error of forcing the 19-pin plug onto a 9-pin header.
- Port replication in a rack chassis. Two front ports are not enough, so a second USB 3.0 header is populated as well. Both headers are independent, so each pair draws its own bus power budget of up to 900 mA per port.
- Field upgrade of an older case. The case harness predates USB 3.0 and has only a 2.0 branch. Moving it to the JUSB3 header is pointless; the correct action is to replace the front-panel assembly with a 19-pin harness, or accept 2.0 speeds deliberately.
Install and Fault-Find Sequence
- Identify the header by position count and pitch, then match it against the silkscreen label.
- Locate the key position on the board header and the corresponding keyed rib on the plug.
- Align the plug vertically and press straight down with even force until the retention latches engage.
- Inspect for bent, recessed or protruding pins before power-up; any of these indicates misalignment.
- Apply gentle cable strain relief so the harness weight does not load the header joints.
- Boot, confirm both ports enumerate, then confirm the negotiated speed with a 3.0 device on each port separately.
- If one port only runs at 2.0 speed, suspect a damaged SuperSpeed pair rather than the header, and swap the harness to isolate the fault.
Sourcing Notes
For OEM programs, specify the plug key position, the housing height, the pitch, the wire gauge and the harness length. Ask about insertion force and retention force windows, since a loose plug can vibrate free in transit and an over-tight one damages the header on the line. Keep the internal harness and any external extension inside the roughly 3 m passive limit for SuperSpeed signaling, and remember that the 900 mA of 5 V bus power available on these ports is shared from the board regulator, not generated by the connector.
Power and Ground Behavior on JUSB3 Headers
Each port on the header receives 5 V bus power on its own VBUS contact and returns through its own ground contact. Both ports share the drain return used for the SuperSpeed pairs, which is why a damaged drain trace can degrade both ports at the same time even though the two data paths are otherwise independent. That detail matters during fault-finding: one port failing is usually a harness problem, while both ports degrading at once more often points to the shared return path or to the header itself.
The header does not generate power. It delivers what the board regulator provides, up to 900 mA at 5 V per port under the USB 3.0 specification, roughly double the USB 2.0 baseline. In a front panel carrying two ports plus a card reader, the combined load can exceed the budget of a heavily populated board, so integrators should total the worst-case current of every downstream front-panel device before promising full compliance with the specification.
FAQ
1. What is the JUSB3 connector used for?
It is the internal USB 3.0 header on boards that use sequential J-numbering. It carries two complete SuperSpeed front-panel ports on a 2.00 mm pitch 19/20-pin body and is normally the header a chassis front-panel USB 3.0 harness plugs into.
2. Is JUSB3 the same as F_USB30?
Electrically, yes. Both labels denote the 19/20-pin USB 3.0 internal header carrying two downstream ports. Only the silkscreen wording differs between vendors. Confirm by counting positions and measuring the 2.00 mm pitch rather than trusting the label alone.
3. Can I connect a 2.0 front panel to a JUSB3 header?
Not directly. A 9-pin USB 2.0 plug is a different body size on a 2.54 mm pitch and will not seat on a 2.00 mm header. Use the legacy branch of a 3.0 harness if your board has only 2.0 headers, or replace the front-panel assembly.
4. Why does one of my two front ports run slower?
Each port has its own USB 2.0 pair and its own SuperSpeed transmit and receive pairs, so a single failed pair affects one port only. Check the harness for a broken conductor or a partial crimp on that port’s SuperSpeed wires, then confirm with a swap test.
5. How much power does a JUSB3 port supply?
A standard USB 3.0 downstream port supplies up to 900 mA at 5 V, roughly double the 500 mA baseline of USB 2.0. All ports on the header draw from the board’s regulator, so heavily loaded front panels can be limited by the host power budget rather than by the connector.
