IDE and SATA Adapter: Connecting an Old Drive to a New Machine
Old drives still hold data, and the machines that could read them are gone. A bridge adapter is the practical route, provided the details of a 40 pin interface are handled correctly.
Quick Answer
An IDE and SATA adapter contains a bridge chip that converts parallel ATA signalling to SATA. It needs the correct connector for the drive, a Molex power input because the drive expects 5 and 12 V, and it usually presents the drive as a single device, so no master or slave jumper is required. Expect the bridge chip, not the drive, to be the performance ceiling.
Connector Variants
| Drive type | Connector | Adapter needed |
|---|
| Desktop PATA drive | 40 pin IDE plus Molex power | IDE to SATA with Molex input |
| Laptop PATA drive | 44 pin combined data and power | 44 pin to SATA or to USB |
| SATA drive | 7 pin data and 15 pin power | Standard SATA adapter |
| SCSI drive | 50 or 68 pin | Different bridge, not common |
| M.2 SATA drive | M.2 edge connector | Carrier board to 2.5 inch format |
Details That Decide Success
Jumper settings
Most bridge adapters expect the drive to be the only device, so cable select or single drive settings work. Master and slave pairs do not apply.
Power
PATA drives need both 5 and 12 V through a Molex connector. USB alone will not spin a 3.5 inch drive.
Capacity limits
Very old drives may exceed the addressing limits of some bridges. Large drives over 128 GB can be problematic on early bridges.
Performance
Bridge chips cap throughput. Do not expect modern speeds, and do not use the drive for active work.
Pin one orientation
The ribbon connector fits in one orientation only, marked by a coloured stripe and a key. Never force it.
Procedure for Reading an Old Drive
- Identify whether the drive is 40 pin desktop or 44 pin laptop format.
- Set the drive jumper to single or cable select.
- Connect the adapter and apply Molex power before the data connection where the adapter requires it.
- Confirm the drive appears in the operating system.
- Copy data off immediately, since old drives are unreliable.
Real-World Applications
- Recovering documents and photos from a retired computer.
- Migrating data from a legacy machine before disposal.
- Reading archived drives from a store room.
- Copying an old drive to a modern SSD.

FAQ
Do I need to set master or slave jumpers?
Usually not, since the bridge presents one device. Single or cable select settings normally work.
Can a USB port power a 3.5 inch IDE drive?
No. It needs 12 V, which requires an external supply or a Molex input.
Why is the transfer so slow?
The bridge chip and the drive itself are both slow by modern standards. Old drives often manage well under 100 MB/s.
Is the data safe to copy?
Yes, but copy it promptly and verify the files afterwards. Old drives fail without warning.
