Choosing an HDMI Cable for a Computer Monitor
A monitor does not care how much a cable costs, only whether the cable can carry the mode the monitor and the graphics card agree on. Buying HDMI cables for monitors is mostly a matching exercise: identify the screen resolution and refresh rate, find the HDMI version that supports that combination, then pick a length that keeps the signal clean. Most returns happen because an 18Gbps cable was expected to run 4K at 144Hz, or because a three metre cable turned into a ten metre run.
Quick Answer
For a 1080p 60Hz monitor any High Speed HDMI cable works. For 4K 60Hz with HDR, use a Premium High Speed cable rated at 18Gbps. For 1440p at 144Hz or 4K above 60Hz, use an Ultra High Speed cable, or DisplayPort if the monitor offers it.
| Monitor spec | Cable needed | Length tip | Check |
|---|
| 1080p at 60Hz | Any High Speed HDMI | Up to 15m passive | Port version |
| 4K at 30Hz | HDMI 1.4 or better | Up to 15m | HDCP support |
| 4K at 60Hz HDR | Premium High Speed 18Gbps | 2m to 5m passive | Certified label |
| 1440p at 144Hz | HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort | Under 5m | Manual refresh limit |
Match the Cable to the Monitor Mode
Start with the monitor specification rather than the cable shelf. A 1080p 60Hz panel needs about 4.5Gbps, which every HDMI cable made in the last fifteen years can supply. A 4K 60Hz HDR panel needs 18Gbps. A 4K 144Hz panel needs close to 48Gbps, which only Ultra High Speed cable is tested for.
Refresh rate is often the hidden limit. A monitor may accept 4K at 60Hz over HDMI 2.0 and 4K at 144Hz only over DisplayPort, so a cable upgrade alone will not unlock the higher mode. Read the manual for the maximum refresh rate on each input.
HDR and Colour Depth
HDR adds bandwidth because it carries more colour information and a higher bit depth. A cable that runs 4K at 60Hz at 8-bit colour may drop to 30Hz when 10-bit HDR is switched on. If HDR keeps turning itself off in the display settings, the cable is the usual cause.
Length, Shielding and Cable Build
Short passive cables are the most reliable choice for a desk. Under three metres, an 18Gbps or 48Gbps cable works with no electronics inside, so there is nothing to fail. Longer runs lose high frequency signal, and thin conductors lose it faster than thick ones.
Shielding becomes relevant near power supplies, monitor arms with USB hubs and LED lighting. A braided outer jacket protects the cable mechanically, but the inner foil and braid do the electrical work. Look for a cable that states its conductor gauge rather than only its jacket material.
When to Use Active or Fibre HDMI
Above five metres at 18Gbps, an active cable with a built-in equaliser is more dependable. Above ten metres, fibre HDMI is the safer choice for a wall mounted display or a ceiling projector, because it carries the signal as light rather than as a copper wave.
Ports, Adapters and Common Mistakes
Many monitors ship with one HDMI and one DisplayPort input, and the second input may be an older version. Plugging into the wrong one can cap the refresh rate. Read the label next to each port, and prefer DisplayPort for a high refresh gaming monitor when both are available.
Adapters and Signal Converters
An adapter between HDMI and DisplayPort must be directional. A DisplayPort to HDMI adapter works from computer to monitor, while the reverse needs an active converter. Passive plug adapters only change the physical shape and cannot translate between the two protocols.
Real-World Applications
- An office replaces desks with 27 inch 1440p monitors. A two metre High Speed HDMI cable handles 1440p at 60Hz, and the cable in the box is kept as a spare.
- A gamer buys a 4K 144Hz monitor and finds 4K locked at 60Hz. The fix is an Ultra High Speed cable, because the old cable was an 18Gbps unit.
- A designer wall mounts a 4K display four metres from the desk. An active HDMI cable keeps 4K 60Hz stable where the passive cable flickered.
- A school connects twenty monitors to slim PCs that only have HDMI output. Buying one cable specification in bulk keeps every desk identical and avoids mode mismatches.

FAQ
Do all HDMI cables work with monitors?
Physically yes, every HDMI plug fits every HDMI port. In practice a low speed cable may refuse 4K 60Hz or HDR, so the cable rating has to match the monitor mode.
Is DisplayPort better than HDMI for monitors?
For high refresh rates and multi-monitor setups, DisplayPort is usually the better link. For televisions and consoles HDMI is the standard. Most monitors accept both inputs.
Why does my monitor show no signal with a new cable?
Check that the monitor is set to the correct input, then reseat both ends. If the cable is directional, such as fibre HDMI, confirm the source and display ends are the right way round.
Can a long HDMI cable reduce image quality?
A digital link either delivers the picture or drops it. Long cables cause sparkles, flicker and dropouts rather than gradual softness, and they often force a lower resolution to stay stable.
