Quick Answer / Summary: For soundbar and AVR connections at 15 feet: use the TV’s eARC/ARC port for the audio return link (any certified cable – audio bandwidth is trivial); connect sources directly to the TV when the soundbar lacks pass-through, or through the AVR/soundbar when it passes 4K60; and put the certified (Premium) cable on whichever link carries the highest video format. The audio never drives the cable choice – the video path does.
When a fifteen-foot HDMI cable joins a TV with a soundbar or an AVR, the questions shift from pure bandwidth to topology: which port, which direction the audio flows, whether the soundbar sits in the video path or beside it, and which link in the chain carries the heavy format. Get the topology right and any certified cable completes the system. This guide covers the three standard soundbar and AVR layouts and the cable logic for each.
Layout 1: Sources to TV, eARC to Soundbar
The modern default: sources connect straight to the TV’s inputs, and one fifteen-foot cable returns audio from the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar. The video links carry the picture formats – each one certified to its format – and the eARC link carries only audio, which occupies a fraction of the link’s capacity: any certified fifteen-foot cable serves it perfectly. The setup disciplines: use the TV’s designated ARC/eARC port (it is specific), enable eARC and CEC in both the TV and soundbar menus, and expect a brief handshake delay on power-up. This layout upgrades the sound without touching the video chain.
Layout 2: AVR in the Middle
The classic home theater chain: sources to AVR, AVR to TV over the fifteen-foot link. Here the long cable carries the system’s main video format – 4K60 from the AVR’s output – so this is the link that needs the Premium certification. The AVR switches the sources, processes audio to the speakers, and passes the video through. Two rules keep it healthy: the AVR’s pass-through must support the format being sent (an older AVR caps the chain at its own bandwidth), and the single long cable is the place to spend on certification – the short source-to-AVR links run the same formats at lengths where any decent cable works.
Layout 3: Soundbar with Pass-Through
Some soundbars sit in the video path: source to soundbar to TV, with the soundbar extracting audio and passing video onward. The cable logic follows the video: the link into the soundbar and the link out both carry the full format, so both need the certification of the highest format in the system. Verify the soundbar’s pass-through rating – a 1080p-era soundbar in a 4K chain caps the picture, a common surprise. When the soundbar has no pass-through, revert to Layout 1: everything to the TV, audio back over eARC on the fifteen-foot link.
Soundbar and AVR Layouts at 15 ft
| Layout | 15 ft Link Carries | Cable Requirement | Key Discipline |
|---|
| Sources to TV + eARC to bar | Audio only (return) | Any certified | Use the eARC port, enable CEC |
| AVR in the middle | Main video (4K60) | Premium certified | AVR must pass the format |
| Soundbar pass-through | Full video both links | Certified on both | Check the bar’s 4K rating |
| No pass-through bar | Audio only (eARC) | Any certified | Revert to Layout 1 |
Real-World Application Scenarios
Soundbar upgrades where the fifteen-foot eARC link adds audio without disturbing the video chain. AVR home theaters with the rack across the room and one certified long link to the panel. Mixed systems where an older soundbar’s pass-through caps the picture and the fix is the topology, not the cable. Multi-source living rooms where the AVR or TV switches and the cable just needs to carry the format cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Do I need a special 15 ft HDMI cable for eARC to my soundbar?
A: No – eARC audio uses a fraction of the link’s capacity, so any certified fifteen-foot cable carries it completely. Use the TV’s designated eARC/ARC port and enable CEC in both devices; the video formats, not the audio, set cable requirements.
Q: Should sources connect to my AVR or directly to the TV?
A: If the AVR passes your format (4K60/120) and switches inputs conveniently, the AVR-in-the-middle layout works with one certified long link to the TV. If the AVR is older or the soundbar lacks pass-through, connect sources straight to the TV and return audio over eARC.
Q: Why is my picture only 1080p through my soundbar?
A: The soundbar’s video pass-through is likely 1080p-rated – it caps the whole chain regardless of the cables. Move the video path (sources direct to TV, audio back over eARC) or upgrade to a soundbar/AVR that passes your format. No cable fixes a pass-through ceiling.
