Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 Cable: The 48 Gbps Class
HDMI 2.1 features such as 4K at 120 Hz, 8K at 60 Hz and variable refresh rate need 48 Gbps of bandwidth. A cable that merely says HDMI 2.1 on the packaging may not carry it.
Quick Answer
Ultra High Speed is the certified cable class for 48 Gbps. Certification is tested at the cable level rather than the connector level, and certified products carry a verification label. Passive copper Ultra High Speed cables hold 48 Gbps over short runs, typically up to about three metres. Longer runs need an active or optical cable in the same certified class.
Cable Classes
| Class | Bandwidth | Typical support | Practical length |
|---|
| Standard | About 4.9 Gbps | 1080i | Long |
| High Speed | About 8.2 Gbps | 1080p, 4K at 30 Hz | Long |
| Premium High Speed | 18 Gbps | 4K at 60 Hz with full colour | Up to about 5 m |
| Ultra High Speed | 48 Gbps | 4K120, 8K60, HDR, VRR | About 3 m passive |
| Optical or active | 48 Gbps | Same features | 15 m and beyond |
What 48 Gbps Unlocks
4K at 120 Hz
Required for high frame rate gaming and for smooth motion on 120 Hz panels.
8K at 60 Hz
Needs the full bandwidth with compression applied on top.
Variable refresh rate
Removes tearing and stutter when the source frame rate varies.
Enhanced audio return channel
Carries uncompressed object based audio from the television to a soundbar or receiver.
Why Length Matters More Now
Signal integrity
At 48 Gbps the margin is narrower than at 18 Gbps, so attenuation over distance bites earlier.
Direction of failure
A marginal cable usually shows as intermittent black frames or loss of HDR rather than a clean failure.
Active and optical options
Both extend reach. Active copper uses equalisation, optical converts to light and back, and neither should reduce bandwidth if certified.
Buying Checklist
- Check the certification label rather than the version number on the box.
- Confirm the certificate against the manufacturer listing if it matters.
- Measure the run and choose passive or active accordingly.
- Decide whether the display and source both support the features you want.
- Remember that both devices must meet the standard, not only the cable.
Real-World Applications
- 4K 120 Hz gaming consoles and graphics cards.
- 8K displays requiring the full bandwidth.
- Home cinema with object based audio over eARC.
- Variable refresh rate monitors and televisions.

FAQ
Does any HDMI 2.1 cable carry 48 Gbps?
No. Only the Ultra High Speed certified class is tested for 48 Gbps.
How long can a passive one be?
About three metres reliably. Beyond that, use an active or optical cable.
Will it improve my existing 4K setup?
Only if your source and display support features that need 48 Gbps, such as 120 Hz or 8K.
Why does the image cut out occasionally?
Usually a cable at the edge of its length or a non certified cable. Try a shorter certified one.
