Direct Burial Speaker Wire: Jacket First, Gauge Second
Quick answer / TL;DR: Short answer: use cable explicitly rated for direct burial, usually with a polyethylene jacket, and choose a gauge for the distance as you would indoors. Bury below the frost line where relevant and deeper than routine digging. If the soil is wet or the route crosses a drain, use a gel-filled or conduit-protected construction instead of relying on the jacket alone.
Three bulk formats: reel, payout box, half box – the choice is about payout and splices.Burying a speaker cable exposes it to moisture, soil chemistry and mechanical damage. Direct burial cable is built for that; ordinary in-wall cable is not.
The jacket compound is the difference, and it is the first thing to specify.
Jacket Types
| Construction | Moisture resistance | Use |
|---|
| PVC in-wall | Low | Indoors only |
| PE direct burial | Good | Buried runs |
| Gel filled | Very good | Wet or submerged soil |
| Conduit + indoor cable | Depends on sealing | Where conduit exists |
A PVC jacket absorbs moisture over years, which changes the dielectric and can corrode the copper. That is why indoor cable fails underground even when it appears intact.
Installation Practice
- Bury deeper than routine garden digging
- Leave a service loop at each end
- Seal conduit entries against water
- Photograph the route before backfilling
- Test the run before covering it
Testing before backfill is the single highest-value step. A fault found afterwards means digging the route again.
Real-World Applications
A patio pair 40 ft from the house uses direct burial 14/2 in a shallow trench with a service loop at each end. A route crossing a drainage channel should use conduit or gel-filled cable, because standing water is the failure mode that direct burial jackets handle worst.
Standards and Verification
| Reference | Relevance |
|---|
| UL 444 | Communications cable |
| NEC Article 725 | Class 2 and 3 circuits |
| ASTM B3 | Copper conductor |
Depth requirements vary by local code and are not provided in the knowledge base. Check the applicable regulation before digging.
Practical Notes
Keep a resistance measurement of each buried run on file. Comparing it a year later detects moisture ingress before it becomes audible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bury regular speaker cable?
No. It absorbs moisture and corrodes.
How deep?
Below routine digging depth; check local code.
Gel filled or conduit?
Either, where water is likely.
