Quick Answer / Summary: A coaxial sound cable carries high-frequency digital audio signals (S/PDIF) between source devices and amplifiers or soundbars. Engineered with a strict 75-ohm characteristic impedance, solid OFC copper conductor, and dual-layer shielding, it delivers uncompressed stereo audio and 5.1 surround sound without dropouts or noise.
In high-resolution stereo listening rooms, home theater surround sound installations, and professional recording studios, the coaxial sound cable serves as the primary physical conduit for transmitting Sony/Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) bitstreams between digital audio transports, CD players, network streamers, and high-performance Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs). Unlike standard analog RCA interconnects, a true digital coaxial cable operates at high radio frequencies (up to 6 MHz for 192 kHz/24-bit PCM), demanding strict 75-ohm characteristic impedance, foamed dielectric insulation, and dual-layer shielding to prevent signal reflections and jitter-induced timing distortion.
S/PDIF Protocol Physics and the 75-Ohm Impedance Mandate
Why high-frequency digital audio transmission requires strict RF engineering: 1. High-Frequency Biphase Mark Encoding: The S/PDIF digital audio standard uses Biphase Mark Code (BMC) modulation to embed left and right audio channels alongside clock timing into a single electrical bitstream; at standard 44.1 kHz CD resolution, the signal transitions at 2.8 MHz; when transmitting high-resolution 192 kHz / 24-bit uncompressed audio, fundamental frequencies exceed 6 MHz with square-wave harmonics reaching 30 MHz; at these frequencies, cables behave as RF transmission lines governed by characteristic impedance; 2. The Danger of Impedance Mismatches: If a standard 50-ohm analog RCA audio cable or generic uncalibrated wire is used instead of a true 75-ohm digital coaxial cable, the impedance mismatch creates internal signal reflections at the connector boundary; reflected electrical pulses collide with incoming digital bit transitions, rounding the sharp square-wave edges and causing clock phase jitter in the DAC’s receiver chip; audible jitter manifests as loss of high-frequency detail, smudged stereo imaging, and harsh vocal sibilance; 3. Dual-Layer 100% Shielding Architecture: Because digital bitstreams contain sharp, high-speed transitions, unshielded or poorly shielded cables emit electromagnetic interference (EMI) while remaining vulnerable to external radio frequency interference (RFI) from Wi-Fi routers and power supplies; a professional digital coaxial cable utilizes an internal 100% bonded aluminum-mylar foil wrap backed by a dense 95% tinned copper braid to ensure a zero-noise ground plane.
Solid Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) Center Conductor
Professional 75-ohm digital cables feature a heavy 18 AWG or 20 AWG solid bare OFC center conductor; solid core geometry eliminates internal inter-strand electron jumping, preserving clean square-wave rise times across long cable runs.
Nitrogen-Injected Gas-Foamed Polyethylene Dielectric
The velocity of propagation (VoP) of the digital signal depends entirely on the insulating dielectric; nitrogen-foamed polyethylene provides an 82% VoP with exceptionally low dielectric loss (tan δ < 0.0004), preventing high-frequency signal attenuation.
Coaxial Digital S/PDIF vs. Optical TOSLINK Comparison
While both formats carry identical S/PDIF data packets up to 192 kHz, digital coax avoids the electrical-to-optical conversion steps required by TOSLINK LED transmitters, delivering sharper rise times, wider bandwidth, and lower clock jitter over long runs up to 50 feet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can I use a regular yellow video RCA cable as a coaxial sound cable?
A: Yes; composite video RCA cables (traditionally marked yellow) are manufactured to strict 75-ohm impedance standards to carry 6 MHz analog video; they function excellently as 75-ohm digital coaxial audio cables; however, you should avoid using standard red/white analog audio RCA cables, which have uncontrolled impedance.
Q: Is digital coaxial better than optical TOSLINK?
A: For high-resolution audio (192 kHz/24-bit), digital coaxial is generally superior because it provides higher bandwidth and avoids the electrical-to-optical conversion delays that introduce clock jitter; however, optical TOSLINK is preferred if your system suffers from 60Hz ground loop hum, as glass/plastic fiber provides 100% electrical isolation.
