Quick Answer / Summary: A multiport USB-C hub is an active hardware dock that leverages USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode and high-speed data multiplexers. It splits a single host USB-C port into 4K@60Hz HDMI video, Gigabit RJ45 Ethernet, multiple USB-A/C 5Gbps/10Gbps data ports, and up to 100W USB Power Delivery pass-through charging.
As modern laptops, ultrabooks, and MacBooks eliminate legacy ports in favor of minimal USB-C connectors, professionals face severe peripheral bottlenecks. A certified multiport adapter or hub consolidates video output, wired networking, high-speed data peripherals, and DC power delivery into a single high-efficiency interconnect.
Protocol Multiplexing and Bandwidth Allocation
A single USB-C port provides four physical high-speed differential lanes. In a standard multiport hub, bandwidth is divided: two lanes are dedicated to DisplayPort Alternate Mode (driving 4K@60Hz video via Display Stream Compression, or 4K@30Hz uncompressed), while the remaining two lanes carry USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) or Gen 2 (10Gbps) data traffic to internal hub controllers and Ethernet silicon.
Integrated Gigabit Ethernet Silicon (Realtek / ASIX)
Modern hubs embed dedicated PCIe or USB-to-Ethernet controllers (such as Realtek RTL8153), delivering 1000Mbps wired networking with hardware checksum offloading and energy-efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az).
USB Power Delivery 3.0 Pass-Through (100W)
The hub features a dedicated USB-C PD input port that negotiates up to 20V/5A (100W) from the wall charger. The hub reserves approximately 15W to power its internal silicon and connected USB drives, delivering a clean 85W to the host laptop.
Thermal Management and Anodized Aluminum Enclosures
Operating 4K video converters and Gigabit Ethernet generates significant heat. High-grade multiport hubs utilize extruded aluminum alloy chassis that act as passive heat sinks, preventing thermal throttling during multi-hour video editing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Why does my 100W charger only charge my laptop at 85W through a multiport hub?
A: The hub consumes approximately 15W of bus power to run its internal video conversion chips, Ethernet controller, and connected USB flash drives, passing the remaining 85W to your laptop.
Q: Can a multiport USB-C hub output 4K video at 60Hz?
A: Yes, our certified multiport hubs support DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode with DSC, delivering true 4K@60Hz without motion jitter on compatible laptops.
