Quick Answer / Summary: An MPO fiber cable is a high-density multi-fiber optical assembly pre-terminated with multi-fiber push-on (MPO) connectors on one or both ends. Available in trunk, harness (fanout), and cassette configurations across multimode (OM4/OM5) and singlemode (OS2) glass, it delivers plug-and-play parallel optical transmission for 40G, 100G, and 400G network switches.
In modern hyperscale cloud facilities, artificial intelligence GPU server clusters, and enterprise storage area networks, running individual duplex patch cords between equipment rows creates unmanageable cable tray congestion. An engineered mpo fiber cable condenses 12, 24, 72, or 144 optical fibers into a single micro-diameter trunk assembly, accelerating data center deployment velocity while dramatically improving cooling airflow.
MPO Cable Typologies: Trunks, Harnesses, and Breakouts
MPO cabling infrastructure is organized into three distinct operational configurations: 1. MPO Trunk Cables: Permanent backbone links featuring MPO connectors on both ends (female-to-female or male-to-female) with 12 to 144 fibers, routing between Main Distribution Frames (MDF) and server row cabinets; 2. MPO Harness / Fanout Cables: Feature an MPO connector on one end that breaks out into 6, 8, or 12 duplex LC connectors, allowing 40G/100G switch ports to interface directly with 10G/25G server NICs; 3. MPO Cassettes: Modular plug-and-play 19-inch rack units housing internal MPO-to-LC fanouts inside a shielded metal enclosure.
Polarity Methods A, B, and C Across MPO Trunks
TIA-568 specifies three trunk polarity types: Type A (Straight-Through, Key-Up to Key-Down), Type B (Inverted / Cross-Over, Key-Up to Key-Up), and Type C (Pair-Flipped). Type B polarity trunks are the modern standard for direct transceiver-to-transceiver 40G/100G parallel links.
Microduct Round Cable vs. Flat Ribbon Jacketing
While early MPO cables used stiff flat ribbons, modern high-density trunks deploy round 3.0mm micro-core jackets with flexible aramid yarn reinforcement, allowing omnidirectional bending through tight cable management arms.
Pre-Installed Pulling Eyes for Safe Conduit Installation
Long MPO trunks ship with factory-installed mesh pulling eyes that completely enclose the delicate MPO connectors in a crush-proof capsule, absorbing up to 300 lbs of pulling tension during conduit pulls.
MPO Fiber Cable Architecture Types Compared
| MPO Cable Form Factor | Fiber Count & Grade | Connector Termination Type | Primary Data Center Role |
|---|
| MPO Backbone Trunk | 12 to 144 Fibers (OM4 / OS2) | MPO Female to MPO Female | Permanent backbone between core spine switches & leaf racks |
| MPO to LC Fanout Harness | 8 or 12 Fibers (OM4 Multimode) | 1x MPO-12 to 4x or 6x Duplex LC | Breaking out 40G/100G switch ports to 10G/25G server NICs |
| MPO Transition Cassette | 12 or 24 Fibers (Modular) | Rear MPO Ports to Front LC Jacks | Structured patching inside high-density 1U/2U rack panels |
| MPO Direct Attach Patch | 8 Fibers (OM4 Type-B) | MPO Female to MPO Female (Short) | Direct switch-to-switch QSFP+ transceiver interconnects |

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is the difference between an MPO trunk cable and an MPO breakout cable?
A: An MPO trunk cable has MPO multi-fiber connectors on both ends for backbone routing; an MPO breakout cable has an MPO connector on one end that splits into multiple duplex LC connectors on the other end to connect individual servers.
Q: What polarity MPO cable is required for 40GBASE-SR4 and 100GBASE-SR4?
A: 40G and 100G parallel optics almost universally require Type-B (Key-Up to Key-Up) polarity MPO cables to ensure the transmit lasers on one switch connect to the receive photodiodes on the other switch.
