RS232 to USB: What Actually Changes in the Conversion

RS-232 and USB have almost nothing in common: different voltages, different signalling, different connectors. The adapter between them is doing real translation work, and knowing which parts it handles prevents most field problems.

Quick Answer

An RS232 to USB adapter converts the plus or minus 3 to 15 V RS-232 signalling into USB data and back, and presents a virtual COM port on the computer. It changes voltage levels, framing and timing, but it does not change the serial parameters your equipment expects, and it cannot correct a wiring error, a wrong baud rate or a missing handshake line.

What the Adapter Handles

Level conversion

The chip generates the negative and positive voltages RS-232 needs, using either a charge pump or an external supply.

Framing

Start bits, data bits, parity and stop bits are assembled and interpreted in both directions.

Buffering

USB transfers arrive in packets, so the adapter buffers them into a continuous serial stream.

Flow control

Hardware handshaking on RTS and CTS is managed by the adapter where supported.

FAQ

Is RS232 to USB the same as USB to serial?

Yes, described from the equipment side rather than the computer side. The product is the same.

Can I connect RS-232 directly to a USB port with a passive adapter?

No. RS-232 voltages would damage a USB port, and the signalling is incompatible.

Why do I get garbled characters?

Baud rate, parity or stop bits do not match the equipment, or flow control is disabled when it is required.

How long can the RS-232 side be?

About 15 m at moderate rates. Longer runs call for RS-422 or RS-485 converters.
