If you are looking for a difference in the wire assignment, there is not one. Cat5e and Cat6 use the same eight conductors in the same eight positions, whichever color code you follow. What separates them is what happens in the last few centimeters before each contact.

The pinout does not change
Both categories use four pairs and eight positions, and both are terminated to one of two color-code conventions. Which convention you use matters far more than which category you are installing, because a cable terminated to one convention at each end and the other at the far end will not work.
The two conventions and the reasoning behind them are set out in our T568A and T568B guide. For this page the relevant fact is that the choice is independent of the category: a Cat6 installation follows exactly the same wires into exactly the same positions as a Cat5e one.
What actually changes when you terminate Cat6
The spline. Most Cat6 constructions carry a plastic separator between the pairs. It has to be cut back far enough that it does not obstruct the contacts and not so far that the pairs lose the separation the design depends on. On a keystone the usual practice is to trim it flush with the jacket; on a plug, follow the plug manufacturer’s instruction, because the load bar position determines where the spline ends.
Untwisted length. This is where Cat6 is less forgiving than Cat5e. The pair has to stay twisted almost to the point where it enters the contact. The allowance commonly cited is on the order of half an inch of untwisted pair for Cat6, against about an inch for Cat5e. Jack and plug designs differ, and the component manufacturer’s figure is the one that governs their warranty — so read the instruction sheet rather than working from a rule of thumb.
Stiffness. 23 AWG solid copper with a spline is a stiffer cable than 24 AWG without one. It takes a wider bend radius, it resists being dressed tightly into a small box, and it punishes a keystone that is being forced into a shallow back box. The bend radius rule is a multiple of the outer diameter, and it applies immediately behind the termination as well as along the run.
Outer diameter. The larger jacket means fewer cables per conduit and less room in a crowded raceway. Where a Cat5e installation was planned and the cable is being upgraded, the fill calculation should be redone rather than assumed.
Where the wiring diagrams mislead
A wiring diagram shows the pin positions and the color code. It does not show how much of the pair is separated, how sharply the cable is bent into the box, or whether the jacket was stripped to the right length. Those three things decide whether the channel certifies, and none of them appears in the diagram.
That is why two installations that follow the same diagram produce different results. The diagram is the starting point; the discipline at the termination is the rest of it.
Untwisted length, in plain terms
A twisted pair works because the two conductors trade places at a regular interval, which makes the pair largely immune to outside interference and keeps the pair’s own field contained. Untwist the pair and that protection stops applying over the untwisted section.
The untwisted section is a fraction of the cable length, and it sits at the worst possible place: right at the contact, where the signal is being handed to a connector whose own geometry is already imperfect. This is why the standard gives the untwisted length a limit and why Cat6’s limit is tighter than Cat5e’s. The higher frequency means less tolerance for the same physical defect.
Keystone against plug
Keystone jacks are usually the better choice for permanent links. They have more room for the pair transition, and most designs include a small board that compensates for the impedance change. Punch-down tools seat the conductor consistently, which is a real advantage over crimping.
Plugs belong on factory-made leads and on field repairs. Crimping a plug onto solid Cat6 by hand is the least consistent way to terminate the cable, and it is where most of the marginal channels in the world come from.
If a plug has to be field-fitted, use one rated and sized for the cable — a Cat6 plug on Cat6 cable, with the right load bar for the conductor gauge. A plug designed for a thinner jacket will not close properly, and one designed for a thicker cable will not grip.
Field scenarios
An installer moving from Cat5e to Cat6 on the same site. Same tools, same color code, different discipline. The two changes that matter are trimming the spline consistently and keeping the untwisted length inside the tighter allowance.
A retrofit where Cat6 is pulled into small back boxes designed for Cat5e. Check the bend behind the keystone. A stiffer cable forced into a shallow box creates a tight radius at the point where the channel has the least margin.
A field repair on a long Cat6 run. Use a keystone or a proper splice rather than a hand-crimped plug if the channel needs to certify.
FAQ
Is Cat6 wired differently from Cat5e?
No. The pin assignment is identical. The difference is in the cable construction and in how carefully the termination has to be made.
Can I use the same RJ45 connectors for both?
The interface is the same, but the connector should be rated for the category and sized for the cable’s conductor and jacket.
Does Cat6 need a different color code?
No. T568A and T568B apply to both, and the choice is independent of the category.
How much untwisted pair is allowed?
Cat6 has a tighter allowance than Cat5e — commonly cited at about half an inch against roughly an inch. Follow the component manufacturer’s published figure.
What happens if I untwist too much?
The channel loses crosstalk margin at the termination. It may still link, and it may fail certification or perform badly under load.
Does the spline need to be cut back?
Yes, trimmed so it does not interfere with the contacts and does not compromise the pair separation. The plug or jack instructions specify where it should end.
