Quick Answer / Summary: A CAT6A keystone shielded jack is a modular 8P8C connector constructed with a full die-cast zinc alloy metallic enclosure. Certified up to 500 MHz, it bonds directly to the cable’s foil shield and drain wire, providing 360-degree electromagnetic shielding, eliminating alien crosstalk, and shunting noise to the equipment ground.
In commercial environments with high electromagnetic interference (EMI) or dense multi-cable pathways, unshielded connectors can suffer severe signal degradation. A CAT6A keystone shielded jack encases the electrical termination in a metallic Faraday cage, preventing external radio frequency interference (RFI) from corrupting 10-Gigabit data.
The Faraday Cage Principle: 360-Degree Metallic Enclosure
At 500 MHz, high-frequency electrical signals can easily radiate out of or couple into exposed copper conductors at the termination point. A CAT6A keystone shielded jack encapsulates the internal PCB and IDC blocks within a heavy zinc alloy housing. When locked, the metallic shell forms a continuous Faraday cage, blocking high-frequency noise from adjacent cables.
Drain Wire Bonding and Ground Continuity
The rear metal collar of the shielded jack compresses the cable’s tinned copper drain wire and folded-back foil screen against the metallic housing. This provides a continuous electrical path from the cable shield, through the jack body, to the grounded patch panel and telecommunications grounding busbar.
Eliminating Alien Near-End Crosstalk (ANEXT)
In high-density 48-port patch panels, adjacent jacks are mounted millimeters apart. Shielded keystone jacks isolate each channel completely, eliminating Alien Near-End Crosstalk (ANEXT) between ports without requiring complex field testing.
Mandatory Telecommunications Grounding (ANSI/TIA-607-D)
Installing shielded jacks without bonding the patch panel to an approved telecommunications grounding busbar (TGB) creates a floating ground. Ungrounded shields act as RF antennas, picking up noise and causing higher packet errors than unshielded jacks.
CAT6A Keystone Shielded vs Unshielded Keystone Jack
| Specification Parameter | CAT6A Keystone Shielded | CAT6A Keystone Unshielded | Operational Impact |
|---|
| Housing Material | Full Die-Cast Zinc Alloy | Flame-Retardant ABS Plastic | Zinc provides 360-degree RF shielding |
| Alien Crosstalk Protection | Total Elimination (Physical Faraday cage) | Mitigated by internal trace geometry | Shielded eliminates port-to-port noise |
| Grounding Requirement | Mandatory Telecommunications Ground | None Required | Shielded requires grounded patch panels |
| Conduit Fill Efficiency | Slimmer profile (~7.2mm cable) | Bulkier profile (~8.5mm cable) | Shielded system takes less tray space |
| PoE Thermal Heat Dissipation | Superior (Metal shell conducts heat) | Moderate (Plastic insulates heat) | Shielded jacks stay cooler under 90W PoE |
| Recommended Environment | Data centers, hospitals, factories | Commercial offices, schools | Match hardware to ambient noise |
Real-World Application Scenarios
Data center high-density patch bays, hospital radiology and surgical suites, manufacturing plants with heavy motor drives, and airport communications closets.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can I use a CAT6A keystone shielded jack on an unshielded (UTP) cable?
A: You can, but it provides no shielding benefit; the metal housing will simply act as a durable mechanical enclosure.
Q: Does a shielded keystone jack fit standard wall faceplates?
A: Yes, shielded CAT6A keystone jacks adhere to international keystone dimensions (14.5mm x 16.0mm) and fit all standard commercial wall plates and surface-mount boxes.
