Quick Answer / Summary: An optical to USB adapter receives TOSLINK S/PDIF and delivers it to a computer as a USB recording device – plug it in, select it as the input in your DAW or recording app, and capture PCM stereo up to 24/192. Use it to record from TVs, consoles, CD transports, and mixers with optical outputs. Check for input rate support and simultaneous output if monitoring matters.
Optical to USB is the reverse direction of the familiar adapter: it takes the TOSLINK output of a TV, console, CD player, or interface and delivers it into a computer as USB audio – the capture path for recording, streaming, and archiving. The device is an S/PDIF-to-USB converter, enumerated as a recording device, and its quality is measured in the rates it accepts and the cleanliness of its clock recovery. This guide covers the capture conversion and the setups it serves.
The Capture Conversion
The input-side device is the mirror of the output adapter: a TOSLINK receiver recovers the optical stream, a decoder extracts the audio and its embedded clock, and a USB audio interface chip presents the result to the computer as a standard recording device. The OS needs no drivers for current units (USB Audio Class). The critical internal spec is clock recovery – regenerating a stable clock from the incoming stream – and quality units handle it invisibly while the cheapest add jitter that a DAW’s recording will faithfully preserve.
Rates, Formats, and What Records Cleanly
The input accepts the S/PDIF repertoire: stereo PCM at 44.1 through 192 kHz on quality units. Two format notes for capture work. Bitstreams: a Dolby Digital or DTS stream arriving at the input either records as data (if the unit supports non-audio passthrough) or produces static – know your source’s setting and set it to PCM for standard recording. Bit-perfect verification: a loopback test – play a known file out, capture it in, compare – is the definitive check that the chain records without resampling, and takes ten minutes.
Recording-Chain Setup
The chain is source, TOSLINK cable, adapter, USB, computer. Setup: connect, select the adapter as the computer’s recording device, set its input rate to match the source (or the highest supported), and arm a track in the DAW. Level is not adjustable – S/PDIF is digital, so the record level is the source’s digital level; set it at the source. For monitoring while recording, an adapter with a simultaneous USB-to-output path (or the computer’s own output) closes the loop; for latency-critical monitoring, use the adapter’s direct monitoring if it has one.
Optical to USB Capture Reference
| Item | Specification | Note |
|---|
| Function | TOSLINK in, USB audio out | Enumerates as recording device |
| Accepted rates | 44.1-192 kHz PCM | Match the source setting |
| Bitstreams | PCM reliable; DD/DTS if passthrough | Set source to PCM for recording |
| Record level | Set at the source | Digital in has no gain control |
| Monitoring | Direct or via computer output | Latency matters for tracking |
Real-World Application Scenarios
Archiving CD transports and legacy digital sources into a DAW. Capturing console or TV audio for streaming and content creation. Recording mixer optical outs at live events. Digitizing MiniDisc, DAT, and other S/PDIF-era formats into a modern library.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can I record optical audio into my computer?
A: Yes – an optical to USB adapter presents the TOSLINK stream to the computer as a USB recording device. Select it as the input in your DAW, set the rate to match the source, and record: stereo PCM up to 24/192 on quality units.
Q: Why is my optical recording full of static?
A: The source is probably outputting a Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream that the adapter records as noise. Set the source’s digital output to PCM. If the source is already PCM, re-seat the TOSLINK cable – a half-seated shutter is the other common cause.
Q: How do I control the recording level over optical to USB?
A: You do not – S/PDIF is a digital signal, so the level arriving is the level the source sent. Set output level at the source device; the computer side records it exactly. That is the point of digital capture: no added gain stage, no added noise.
