USB-C Ethernet Hub: Choosing Between Gigabit and 2.5 GbE

Modern laptops removed the network port before they removed the need for one. A USB-C hub with Ethernet restores it and adds sockets at the same time, but the chipset inside decides how well.

Quick Answer

A USB-C Ethernet hub provides an RJ45 socket over a USB-C connection, usually with extra USB ports and often with Power Delivery passthrough. Gigabit models reach about 940 Mbps. For a 2.5 GbE model, the USB-C port must support 5 Gbps or faster and the rest of the network has to keep up. Most common chipsets work without a driver on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Speed Tiers

Model	Link rate needed	Real throughput	Suits
100 Mbps	USB 2.0	About 90 Mbps	Basic office use
Gigabit	USB 3.0	About 940 Mbps	General desktop work
2.5 GbE	USB 3.0	About 2.3 Gbps	NAS and large file work
5 GbE	USB 3.1 Gen 2 or better	About 4.5 Gbps	Video editing over network storage

What to Check Before Buying

USB-C port capability

The port must carry USB data. Some USB-C ports are charging only, and a few are USB 2.0 only, which caps throughput well below gigabit.

Chipset and drivers

Common network chipsets are supported out of the box. Unusual silicon may need a vendor driver, which is a problem on locked down machines.

Power Delivery passthrough

Useful for single cable docking. Expect a small wattage loss through the hub, so a 100 W charger may deliver 85 to 90 W.

Port count and bandwidth sharing

Ethernet traffic shares the upstream link with the USB ports. Running a drive and a large network transfer at once splits the bandwidth.

Real-World Applications

A thin laptop gaining stable wired networking at a desk.
Video work pulling footage from a NAS at 2.5 GbE.
Games consoles or streaming boxes where Wi-Fi is unreliable.
Field engineers connecting to isolated switch cabinets.
