SATA PSU Cable: Why Modular Cables Are Not Universal
A spare modular cable from another power supply looks identical and may be wired differently. Connecting one is the fastest way to destroy a drive and possibly the supply.
Quick Answer
A SATA PSU cable runs from the power supply to the drive, either permanently attached or attached through a modular connector at the supply end. Modular cables are specific to a brand and often to a model series. Never substitute a cable from a different power supply, even when the connector fits. Length is limited only by resistance; quality of the connector and wire gauge is what matters.
Cable Types
| Type | Supply end | Notes |
|---|
| Native or hardwired | Permanently attached | Cannot be changed, generally most reliable |
| Modular | Plug into the supply | Brand and model specific |
| Semi modular | Some cables fixed | Motherboard cables usually fixed |
| Extension | Plugs onto an existing SATA connector | Universal, adds length only |
| Adapter from Molex | Plugs onto a 4 pin Molex | Universal, quality varies |
The Compatibility Warning
Why it happens
The modular connector at the supply end is not standardised. Different manufacturers assign different voltages to the same physical pin positions.
What can go wrong
A 12 V rail applied where a 5 V rail is expected damages the drive immediately. Some mistakes damage the supply as well.
The safe rule
Use only cables supplied with that exact power supply model. Buy replacements from the manufacturer or their designated spares channel.
Choosing an Extension Instead
- Confirm you need reach rather than a replacement cable.
- Identify the connector at the drive end, usually 15 pin SATA power.
- Choose an extension rather than a supply side cable, since extensions are universal.
- Account for the added resistance if several drives share the run.
- Check connector warmth after installation.
What Good Looks Like
- Wire gauge stated on the specification, and thicker is better for multi drive runs.
- Moulded connectors with no visible gaps.
- Consistent lengths across the set for tidy routing.
- Correct connector count for the drives you are installing.
Real-World Applications
- Adding drives to a modular supply with spare outputs.
- Replacing a lost cable with the correct manufacturer part.
- Extending reach to a drive bay rather than replacing the supply cable.
- Converting an older Molex supply for a SATA drive.

FAQ
Can I use a modular cable from another power supply?
No. The pinout is not standardised and the wrong cable can destroy drives.
How do I replace a lost modular cable?
Order the correct cable for your exact supply model from the manufacturer.
Are extension cables safer than replacements?
Extensions plug onto the standard drive side connector, so they are universal and carry no pinout risk.
Does cable length affect drive reliability?
Only through added resistance. Thin, long cables feeding several drives can cause spin up problems.
