A soundbar hooked to the TV’s HDMI ARC port keeps going silent when the app changes, or plays everything a half-second late, and the first instinct is to buy an audio extractor to sort the mess. Before adding a box and another power brick: in most living rooms a single high speed ARC HDMI cable does the whole job, and the fault sits in a settings menu rather than the hardware. This guide covers what ARC can and cannot carry, the one-port rule, and the four settings that fix most silent-soundbar cases.
Quick answer: For a TV plus soundbar, a certified high speed HDMI cable with ARC on the TV’s ARC-labeled port carries all app and broadcast audio back to the bar with no extractor. ARC tops out at compressed 5.1; lossless Dolby Atmos over TrueHD requires eARC, which needs an Ultra High Speed class cable and both devices supporting eARC. If audio works for some apps but not others, it is an audio-format setting, not the cable.
High Speed ARC HDMI Cable: TV to Soundbar Without an Extractor
What ARC actually is – and what it carries
The Audio Return Channel sends audio the “wrong” way down the HDMI cable: from the TV back to a soundbar or receiver, so the TV’s built-in apps, tuner and any device plugged into the TV all play through one sound system. ARC rides the same 18 Gbps-class pipe as video, which is why a certified high speed cable covers it. What ARC carries is defined narrowly:
| Audio format | Over ARC | Over eARC |
|---|
| Stereo PCM | Yes | Yes, at higher bit depth |
| Dolby Digital / DTS 5.1 (compressed) | Yes | Yes |
| Dolby Digital Plus (streaming Atmos) | Yes on most TVs | Yes |
| Lossless TrueHD / DTS-HD MA and object-based Atmos | No – bandwidth-limited | Yes |
Streaming apps deliver Atmos as Digital Plus, which fits inside ARC’s roughly 1 Mbps-class pipe. Lossless formats from discs and high-end players are where eARC earns its keep – and eARC is the point where which features actually need 48 Gbps becomes relevant, because only Ultra High Speed assemblies certify eARC.
Why does my soundbar go silent on some apps?
This is the most searched ARC symptom, and the answer is almost always a format negotiation mismatch rather than a broken cable. The TV app outputs a format the soundbar’s ARC input does not accept, and the TV mutes instead of downmixing.
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|
| Audio on broadcast TV, silence in streaming apps | App outputs Dolby Digital Plus; bar or ARC path rejects it | Set TV audio output to Auto or PCM; disable passthrough in the app |
| No audio at all after TV update | CEC and ARC toggles reset | Re-enable CEC, then Simplink/Anynet-style ARC control |
| Works on short cable, silent on long one | Uncertified long assembly failing the return channel | Use a certified high speed cable rated for the run |
| Audio delayed vs video | Soundbar processing lag | Adjust A/V sync on the bar; enable the TV’s delayed-audio compensation |
Then the port rule: ARC exists on exactly one HDMI input per TV, marked “ARC” or “eARC”. The soundbar goes there, not to any convenient input – a cable swapped to the wrong port produces every symptom above at once.
Do you still need an audio extractor?
An extractor splits HDMI video and audio into separate outputs – typically HDMI to the display plus optical or analog to an older sound system. In a modern TV-plus-soundbar room it adds cost, cabling and one more handshake to fail. It still earns its place in three cases:
- The soundbar has HDMI in but no ARC. Older bars accept audio only from their own HDMI input; the extractor bridges the TV’s output to that input.
- Legacy surround receiver with optical only. Extractor pulls 5.1 off the HDMI chain into the receiver’s optical input.
- Multi-room splits where the display sits far from the audio system and the return path must tap out mid-chain.
None of these apply to a normal living room. There, one certified cable on the ARC port replaces the box entirely – and if the bar supports eARC, upgrading the cable class instead of adding hardware is the cheaper path to lossless audio.
Three real room setups
- TV on a stand, soundbar directly below, console in the cabinet. Console HDMI into the TV, one high speed ARC cable from TV’s ARC port to the bar. One remote controls the volume through CEC; no extractor anywhere.
- Wall TV, bar 3-4 m below in a media cabinet. Certified high speed assembly rated for the run between ARC port and bar; route it before closing the wall channel and label both ends.
- Projector room with AVR. Sources into the receiver, receiver HDMI out to the projector; here ARC works in reverse as the return path from projector apps back to the AVR – same cable rule, one certified assembly.
Setup checklist that prevents 90% of tickets
- Cable into the port labeled ARC, both ends fully seated.
- Enable CEC on the TV and the soundbar, then enable ARC/eARC in the TV’s sound menu.
- Set the TV audio output format to Auto first; drop to PCM if an app goes silent.
- Test one app from each category (broadcast, streaming, console) before finishing the install.
When the bar supports eARC and lossless formats matter, the upgrade path is described in the eARC compatibility guide – same port, newer cable class, no extractor either way.
CEC: the feature that makes ARC feel finished
Consumer Electronics Control is the one-wire side channel that lets the TV remote adjust the soundbar’s volume and wake the bar when the TV powers on. Without CEC, ARC still carries audio but the room ends up with two remotes – which is the moment most households declare the setup broken. Enable CEC on both ends; every brand buries it under its own name (Samsung Anynet+, LG SimpLink, Sony Bravia Sync, Philips EasyLink), so check the soundbar’s manual for its brand-specific term. Two CEC quirks are worth knowing before the support call: HDMI-CEC commands can fight with universal remotes, and some TVs reset CEC settings after firmware updates – the classic soundbar-stopped-working-after-an-update ticket is usually CEC being switched off silently, not ARC failing.
For whole-home installs, note that CEC does not cross HDMI switches reliably. A matrix or AV receiver in the path can swallow the volume commands; in those builds, set the receiver as the audio hub and let ARC serve the projector or TV apps only.
Optical output versus ARC: when the legacy port still wins
Every TV mentioned here also carries an optical audio output, and in two situations the Toslink port beats ARC on stability. First, rooms where the soundbar predates HDMI input entirely – optical is the native connection, immune to the CEC resets and format negotiations that generate ARC tickets. Second, installs where the TV sits on a separate power circuit or gets swapped often: optical carries no control channel, so nothing renegotiates when the display changes. The trade-offs are real – optical maxes out at compressed 5.1 like ARC, cannot carry object-based streaming Atmos on most bars, and adds one more cable to dress. As a tiebreaker, ARC remains the default for convenience and single-remote operation, while optical is the fallback that always works when the HDMI chain misbehaves the night before an event.

FAQ
1. Does a high speed HDMI cable automatically support ARC?
A certified high speed cable carries the ARC signal, but ARC also needs both devices to enable it on the ARC-labeled port. The cable is the transport; the TV and soundbar firmware and settings decide whether the return channel activates. That is why a silent soundbar is usually a settings issue, not a cable purchase.
2. What is the difference between ARC and eARC in practice?
ARC carries compressed 5.1 and streaming Atmos (Dolby Digital Plus) – everything a typical streaming setup needs. eARC adds the bandwidth for lossless formats like Dolby TrueHD and full object-based Atmos from discs. eARC also negotiates automatically between modern devices, while ARC needs CEC and manual toggles far more often.
3. Why does ARC work for TV channels but not Netflix?
Netflix and similar apps can output Dolby Digital Plus, which some ARC chains reject depending on the soundbar’s decoder and the TV’s passthrough settings. Set the TV audio output to Auto, or to PCM when troubleshooting, and disable per-app passthrough. The cable is almost never the cause of app-specific silence.
4. Can I use any HDMI port for a soundbar?
No. Only the input labeled ARC or eARC on the TV has the return channel. Connecting the soundbar to a standard input gives you picture from the bar’s own sources but no TV audio sent back. If the bar also has no HDMI input at all, the TV’s optical output or an extractor is the fallback.
5. How long can an ARC HDMI cable be?
A certified high speed passive cable is specified to 18 Gbps at typical living-room lengths; beyond about 5 m, choose certified active optical construction. ARC’s return signal is low-bandwidth, but the video path on the same cable still has to hold its class, so length ratings apply to the whole assembly.
