A soundbar that stays silent after a TV upgrade is usually not a faulty speaker and not a defective cable. In most cases the audio return path never came up at all, because eARC depends on the right cable class, the correct physical port at both ends, and HDMI CEC enabled on two devices that must discover each other before any audio flows. Bandwidth is rarely the problem: eARC return audio needs only a few tens of Mbps, so a 48 Gbps cable is not the fix. This guide covers what an eARC compatible HDMI cable must actually provide and the setup order that gets the return channel working on the first attempt.
Quick answer: Use an HDMI cable that supports the Ethernet channel, connect the TV output to the port labelled eARC or ARC on the soundbar or AV receiver, and enable HDMI CEC on both devices. Bandwidth needed for the return path is in the tens of Mbps, so an Ethernet-capable High Speed or Premium High Speed cable is sufficient; 48 Gbps is only relevant if the same cable also carries 4K120 video.
eARC Compatible HDMI Cable: Requirements and Setup
ARC and eARC: What Changes on the Cable
A standard HDMI connection runs audio and video one way, from source to display. The Audio Return Channel reverses part of that traffic so the display can send audio back down the same cable to an amplifier or soundbar, which removes the need for a separate optical lead. eARC is the enhanced version introduced with HDMI 2.1. The direction of travel is the same; what changes is how much information the return path can carry and how the two devices agree to use it.
Legacy ARC is limited to compressed 5.1 surround and two-channel PCM, in the region of 1 Mbps of usable bandwidth, and it depends on a single shared conductor that was never designed for high-rate audio. eARC moves the return audio onto dedicated channels that carry several tens of Mbps, enough for uncompressed multi-channel PCM and for object-based formats in their lossless forms. The cable consequence is specific rather than dramatic: the assembly must support the Ethernet channel, which is the capability that allows the return path to run at eARC rates.
The television, the soundbar or receiver, and the cable are three separate requirements. A full-bandwidth cable between two devices that do not implement eARC will still produce ARC-class audio, and two eARC-capable devices joined by a cable with no Ethernet channel will fall back in the same way. Diagnosis starts by confirming which of the three is the limiting factor.
Do You Need an eARC Compatible Cable, or Just a Certified One?
What you need is a cable that supports the Ethernet channel. In practical terms that means a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet, a Premium High Speed HDMI cable, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, all of which carry that capability. Cables sold under older categories may not, and a thin generic lead bundled with a consumer accessory is the most common single cause of a return path that stays on legacy ARC behaviour.
Do not size the cable by eARC alone. The return audio needs tens of Mbps; the video travelling the other way may need far more. If the same run must carry 4K120 at 10-bit 4:4:4 to a high-frame-rate display, the cable has to satisfy the 48 Gbps class as well, and the discussion of which video formats genuinely require that bandwidth belongs in our guide to choosing an HDMI 2.1 cable for TV. One assembly, two different requirements, and the higher one wins.
Comparing ARC and eARC side by side
| Characteristic | ARC | eARC | Practical impact |
|---|
| Introduced with | HDMI 1.4 | HDMI 2.1 | Both devices must support eARC for the enhanced path |
| Usable return bandwidth | About 1 Mbps class | Several tens of Mbps | eARC carries uncompressed multi-channel audio |
| Audio formats | Compressed 5.1 and two-channel PCM | Up to 8 channels of 24-bit PCM at up to 192 kHz, plus object-based formats | Lossless surround becomes possible over one cable |
| Cable requirement | Any functional HDMI cable | Ethernet channel support | Premium High Speed and Ultra High Speed qualify |
| Discovery and control | HDMI CEC | HDMI CEC required for the handshake | CEC disabled at either end stops eARC |
| Lip sync | Manual adjustment often needed | Automatic correction between compatible devices | Fewer manual delay settings to tune |
The CEC row is the one that generates the most service calls. eARC devices discover each other over the Consumer Electronics Control line, so eARC cannot operate when CEC is switched off. Installers who disable CEC to stop one remote controlling three devices also disable eARC, and the resulting fault looks like a hardware failure.
Setup Sequence That Works First Time
Confirm the port, not just the socket
Only one HDMI socket on a television carries the return path, and it is labelled ARC or eARC. On soundbars and receivers the equivalent output is also labelled, and it is frequently the second input rather than the first. Connect the two labelled ports with a single cable and move any streaming device off the ARC socket, because the return path port is shared with an input and a busy source on that socket can prevent the handshake.
Enable CEC, then enable eARC, in that order
Turn on CEC in the TV settings and in the audio device settings first, then select eARC mode in the TV audio output menu, and finally set the audio output format. Devices that poll each other before CEC is active may not advertise the enhanced capability at all, and the television will simply offer ARC behaviour. After changing either setting, power cycle both devices fully rather than relying on standby.
Match the output format to the content
Set the television to pass the encoded audio stream through rather than converting it to stereo PCM, or a lossless track will arrive at the amplifier already reduced to two channels. Conversely, if lip sync is unstable, switching to PCM output will stabilise it at the cost of surround. Test with a known multichannel source rather than a stereo menu screen, and verify the format the amplifier reports rather than trusting the menu label.
Where eARC Installations Fail
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|
| No audio at all from an external device | CEC disabled, or the cable is in the wrong sockets | Enable CEC, use the labelled ARC or eARC ports at both ends |
| Audio works but only in stereo | Legacy ARC fallback or TV set to PCM output | Confirm Ethernet-capable cable and set bitstream pass-through |
| Surround works then drops after a source change | Handshake not re-established between the devices | Power cycle both units, check CEC is still active |
| Audio delay drifts out of sync | Processing in the television ahead of the return path | Use the eARC automatic correction, or switch to PCM |
| Works in one room, fails in another | A splitter or switch in the run breaking the CEC line | Restore a single unbroken run for the return path |
Splitters, wall plates with active electronics and low-cost HDMI switches are recurring culprits because they terminate or regenerate the CEC line independently, which breaks the discovery that eARC depends on. Where a long run to an AV rack is unavoidable, the run must be built from a cable certified for the audio and video requirements, and the return path should not pass through extra active hardware without checking that the hardware passes CEC through.
Three Deployment Scenarios
Soundbar under a wall-mounted television
A short Ethernet-capable Premium High Speed cable from the labelled ARC socket to the soundbar’s own return input, CEC enabled on both, handles uncompressed multi-channel audio and removes the optical lead. Keep the run short and unbroken: at under a metre the video requirement stays inside 18 Gbps, and the return path has plenty of margin.
AV receiver in a rack, display on the wall
The run crosses a wall plate and possibly five to ten metres. A fibre or active optical cable certified for the required video bandwidth keeps 4K60 or 4K120 intact, and the return audio needs only a fraction of that capability. Where several sources feed the receiver, keep one dedicated input for the display’s return path and confirm the wall plate is a passive pass-through rather than an equaliser that may not pass CEC.
Hotel or meeting-room audio upgrade
Displays installed before the eARC specification exist in large numbers, and the return path there is legacy ARC with compressed 5.1. In those rooms the upgraded audio hardware should be fed from a source device directly rather than relying on the display’s return channel, and the cable specification should reflect the video format only. Where the room also runs a distributed audio system, the line-level side of the design is a different question, addressed in our notes on audio speaker cable.
What to Put on the Purchase Order
Write the cable specification as a capability list rather than a version number. State that the assembly must support the Ethernet channel for the return path, state the highest video format the run must carry, and state the certified length. That combination removes the ambiguity that lets a supplier quote a part which satisfies the video requirement while quietly dropping the Ethernet channel the audio return depends on.
Where a site mixes legacy displays with eARC-capable screens, standardise on the same Ethernet-capable class across both rather than buying two categories, because the price difference is small once the video requirement is met, and a single part number removes an entire class of installation error. Buyers who already run installed HDMI runs for audio return of the legacy kind can confirm compatibility against the criteria for a high speed ARC HDMI cable, which remains the correct specification wherever compressed return audio is all the room requires.
FAQ
1. Is a special cable needed for eARC?
You need a cable that supports the Ethernet channel, which is present on High Speed HDMI cables with Ethernet, Premium High Speed and Ultra High Speed HDMI cables. There is no separate eARC certification. Thin generic leads supplied with consumer accessories often lack the Ethernet channel and force legacy ARC operation.
2. Does eARC require a 48 Gbps cable?
No. The return audio path needs only several tens of Mbps, so the cable requirement for eARC is modest. A 48 Gbps Ultra High Speed cable is only necessary when the same run must also carry high-bandwidth video such as 4K120 at 10-bit 4:4:4 to the display.
3. Why does my soundbar only play stereo over eARC?
Stereo output usually means the system fell back to legacy ARC, or the television is converting audio to PCM before it leaves. Confirm the cable supports the Ethernet channel, set the TV audio output to pass the encoded stream through, and verify the format the amplifier reports rather than the label in the menu.
4. Do I have to enable HDMI CEC for eARC to work?
Yes. eARC devices discover each other over the Consumer Electronics Control line, so the handshake cannot complete with CEC disabled at either end. This is why turning CEC off to stop one remote controlling several devices also silently disables the enhanced audio return channel.
5. Can eARC work through a wall plate or HDMI switch?
It can, but only if the hardware passes the CEC line through without terminating or regenerating it. Splitters, active wall plates and low-cost switches are common causes of an audio return path that works in one room and fails in another. Keep the return run as a single unbroken cable where possible.
