Quick Answer / Summary: For eARC, choose the cable by the video on the same leg. Use an Ultra High Speed (48 Gbps) cable when the leg carries 4K120, 8K or high-frame-rate HDR video, and a Premium High Speed (18 Gbps) cable for a 4K60 leg. On an audio-return-only leg with no video, a High Speed cable is enough. There is no eARC-specific cable, because eARC is negotiated between devices rather than built into the cable.
Choosing a cable for an eARC leg is a bandwidth decision dressed up as a feature decision. The cable has to carry the video the leg is running plus the lossless audio return, and the video usually sets the requirement. Getting this right removes the cable as a suspect in every later troubleshooting step, which is the real reason to specify it carefully the first time.
HDMI Cable for eARC: Which Rating Actually Unlocks Lossless Audio
Why the Video Sets the Cable Requirement
An eARC leg is usually a shared link. The receiver or soundbar passes video through to the display and the display returns audio on the same cable, so the total data rate is video plus return. That combined figure determines the rating. A 4K60 HDR leg sits comfortably inside a Premium High Speed cable, while 4K120 or 8K pushes into Ultra High Speed territory.
The return itself is not the heavy part even in its lossless form; the 37 Mbps ceiling of eARC is a rounding error against the tens of gigabits of video. This is why an eARC leg with modest video can use a lower-rated cable: the return will arrive intact as long as the link stays inside specification.
Rating Guide for an eARC Leg
Three ratings cover the field. High Speed covers the 1080p and 4K30 era and is enough for a return-only leg. Premium High Speed covers 4K60 HDR at 18 Gbps. Ultra High Speed is certified for 48 Gbps and covers 4K120, 8K60 and the full range of HDMI 2.1 video features, which is the correct specification for a modern display and receiver pairing.
Matching certification to the video on the leg
Two practical notes complete the picture. Certified Premium and Ultra High Speed products carry a verification artefact, and using certified cable removes the ambiguity that cheap unrated products introduce. And an active or fibre-optic cable is the answer for long runs, because passive copper has practical distance limits that bite hardest at the highest data rates.
Length, Direction and Installation
Length interacts with rating. A 2-metre Ultra High Speed cable is an easy product; a 5-metre passive run at 48 Gbps is harder to build to specification; beyond that, active or fibre designs take over. For a TV-to-receiver leg in a normal room, a 1 to 3 metre passive cable in the right rating is both the cheapest and the most reliable choice.
Direction matters only for active and fibre cables, which are typically marked source and display. Installing one of those backwards produces a link failure that looks like a cable defect, so the connectors are worth labelling before the cable goes behind furniture.
Signs the Cable Is the Limiting Part
A cable problem looks different from a configuration problem. Video sparkles, dropouts or flicker at high resolution alongside audio loss point at the cable or the length. Working video with a silent return points at ports, CEC and audio settings. Working video with compressed audio on a lossless source points at the return standard rather than the cable.
Cable faults against configuration faults
The cleanest test is substitution: move the suspect cable to a known-good short leg and see whether the fault follows. If it does, the cable is the cause; if the fault stays with the equipment, no amount of upgrading will help, and the answer is likely an extractor for an older audio device or a settings change.
Cable Rating for an eARC Leg
| Leg Configuration | Video on the Leg | Rating to Use | Notes |
|---|
| TV eARC to soundbar with passthrough, 4K120 display | 4K120 HDR | Ultra High Speed, 48 Gbps | Certified product with verification artefact preferred |
| TV eARC to receiver, 4K60 display | 4K60 HDR | Premium High Speed, 18 Gbps | Comfortable margin for video plus lossless return |
| Audio-return-only leg, no video | None | High Speed | The return needs a fraction of the link capacity |
| Long in-wall run at 4K120 | 4K120 HDR | Active or fibre-optic Ultra High Speed | Passive copper has practical length limits at 48 Gbps |
| Leg through a switch | As per display | Certified cable plus eARC-capable switch | The switch must pass the return, not only video |
| Temporary test setup | 1080p or 4K60 | Any High Speed cable on hand | Fine for verification, not for a finished installation |
Real-World Application Scenarios
eARC cable selection shows up in three recurring projects. A wall-mounted 4K120 gaming display with a soundbar needs an Ultra High Speed leg, because the panel is used at its full rate. A living room with a 4K60 panel and a receiver needs only a Premium High Speed cable, and specifying above that adds cost without changing the result. A distributed audio system feeding ceiling speakers through an eARC extractor has no video on the leg at all, so a basic High Speed cable is the correct engineering answer rather than a compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is the best HDMI cable for eARC?
A: An Ultra High Speed (48 Gbps) certified cable is the best all-round choice because it covers every current combination of eARC return and high-rate video. For a 4K60 system, a Premium High Speed cable delivers the same audio result at lower cost.
Q: Can a cheap HDMI cable carry eARC?
A: It can if it genuinely meets its claimed rating and the leg stays inside it. Unrated cheap cables often work at short lengths and 4K60 and fail once high-rate video and a lossless return share the link, which makes them a poor choice for installed runs.
Q: Does eARC need an Ethernet-enabled HDMI cable?
A: Not as a marketing feature. What the leg needs is enough certified bandwidth for the video and return travelling together. Many High Speed and Ultra High Speed cables include the Ethernet channel, but the return does not depend on selecting a cable labelled that way.
Q: Why does eARC work with one cable and not another at the same length?
A: Because the two cables are not built to the same rating. One may meet the certification and the other may only match the specification on paper, which shows up as link errors at high data rates rather than as a clean failure.
