Quick Answer / Summary: Use dual-mono wiring (XLR pin 2 tied to both tip and ring, pins 1 and 3 to sleeve) for most XLR-to-aux conversions, and add a -20 dB pad when the XLR output is +4 dBu pro line level. Choose stereo-split wiring (pin 2 to tip, pin 3 to ring) only when the XLR truly carries left and right on pins 2 and 3.
You have a balanced XLR output – a mixer master out, an audio interface line out, or a pro player – and a 3.5 mm aux input on a phone, laptop, or car head unit. An XLR to aux converter looks like a short cable with one XLR end and one 3.5 mm end, but the wiring inside decides whether you hear one summed channel, clean stereo, or a distorted overload. This guide covers the two standard wirings, the level math between pro line and consumer aux, and the build specs to check before you order.
The Two Standard XLR to Aux Wirings
Almost every XLR line output carries one signal in a balanced pair: hot on pin 2, cold on pin 3. When that single signal must reach a 3.5 mm jack, the industry default is dual-mono wiring, where pin 2 feeds both the tip and the ring so the 3.5 mm end behaves like a duplicated mono channel. The alternative, stereo-split, is used only when the XLR output is a genuine stereo pair, with left on pin 2 and right on pin 3. Picking the wrong wiring is the most common failure: a stereo-split cable on a mono source leaves the ring side silent, and a dual-mono cable on a stereo source collapses the image to mono.
Dual-Mono: The Default Choice
Wire pin 2 to tip and ring, and pin 1 plus pin 3 to sleeve. The 3.5 mm end then presents the same mono signal on both poles, which is what a phone aux input, a car head unit, and a laptop line-in all expect from a mono source. This is the wiring we specify for roughly 90 percent of XLR-to-aux orders.
Stereo-Split: Only for True Stereo XLR Outputs
Wire pin 2 to tip (left) and pin 3 to ring (right), sleeve to sleeve. This preserves a stereo image, but only works if the source actually places two different channels on pins 2 and 3. Broadcast consoles and some pro players do this on their stereo XLR outs; most mixers and interfaces do not on a single XLR output.
Pro Line Level vs Consumer Aux Input
A pro XLR line output sits at +4 dBu, which is about 1.23 volts peak. A consumer aux input is designed around -10 dBV, about 0.31 volts. The difference is roughly 14 dB, and while many aux inputs tolerate the higher level, the quiet ones clip at moderate volume. The clean fix is a -20 dB pad inside the converter or in-line: it brings +4 dBu down into the consumer sweet spot and restores headroom. If your aux input never clips, a passive no-pad converter is fine.
Build Specs That Keep the Signal Clean
The 3.5 mm half of the cable is unbalanced, so shielding and contact quality do all the work. Specify 24 AWG conductors, 100 percent foil plus tinned copper braid shielding, 24K gold plating on the 3.5 mm contacts, and a machined nickel XLR housing with a metal lock nut. On runs over a meter, add a ferrite bead at the 3.5 mm end to choke RF pickup from nearby phone chargers and LED drivers.
XLR to Aux Converter Wiring at a Glance
| Wiring | XLR Pin 2 | XLR Pin 3 | XLR Pin 1 | Best For |
|---|
| Dual-Mono | Tip + Ring (L+R duplicated) | Sleeve | Sleeve | Mono XLR line out to any 3.5 mm aux input |
| Stereo-Split | Tip (Left) | Ring (Right) | Sleeve (ground) | True stereo XLR out to a stereo 3.5 mm input |
Real-World Application Scenarios
Route a mixer XLR master out to a phone for backup recording. Feed an audio interface XLR line out into a laptop aux-in for streaming. Bridge a broadcast console XLR output to a USB recorder 3.5 mm input for podcast capture. Connect a wireless receiver XLR out to a car head unit aux port for vehicle PA. In every case the converter keeps the unbalanced 3.5 mm segment under 3 meters so it does not become a hum antenna.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Will an XLR to aux converter clip my laptop input?
A: Only if you feed the laptop mic-in, which expects mic-level signal. A +4 dBu XLR line out into a mic-in will overload it. Use the line/aux input instead, or add a -20 dB pad in the converter.
Q: How long can an XLR to aux converter cable be?
A: Keep the 3.5 mm side under 3 meters in typical rooms and under 10 meters as an absolute maximum, since that side is unbalanced. Beyond that, keep the whole run on balanced XLR and convert at the destination.
Q: Do I need an active XLR to aux converter?
A: Not for line-to-line connections – a passive dual-mono converter is sufficient and has no failure modes. Active converters with a buffer or preamp stage are only needed when the XLR side carries mic-level signal or must drive headphones.
