50 Foot HDMI Cable: Distance, Bandwidth and Alternatives
Fifteen metres is well beyond what ordinary copper HDMI can carry at full bandwidth. The good news is that the problem is solved, just not by standard cable.
Quick Answer
| Method | Distance | 4K at 60 Hz | Notes |
|---|
| Passive copper | Up to about 5 m | Usually yes | Fails over longer runs |
| Active copper | Up to about 15 to 20 m | Often yes | Directional, needs power at one end |
| Optical HDMI | Up to 100 m | Yes | Directional, thin and light |
| HDBaseT extender | Up to 100 m | Yes | Uses Cat6, carries more than video |
| Wireless HDMI | Room scale | Usually | Latency and line of sight |
For 15 metres at 4K 60 Hz, an optical HDMI cable or an HDBaseT extender is the reliable answer.
Why Copper Fails Over Distance
Attenuation
High frequency content is lost first, and that is exactly what carries fine detail and high refresh rates.
Equalisation
Active cables include equalisation to compensate, which is why they need power and are directional.
Optical conversion
Optical cables convert the electrical signal to light, which travels long distances with very little loss.
Failure mode
Long passive cables usually work at low resolutions and fail only when the source switches to a demanding mode.
Practical Considerations
- Decide the maximum resolution and refresh you need at the far end.
- Choose optical or active for runs beyond about five metres.
- Check the direction arrow, since these cables are one way.
- Plan a power source at the source end if the cable requires it.
- Test at the target resolution before finishing the installation.
Real-World Applications
- Projector mounted on a ceiling across a room.
- Signage displays fed from a distant player.
- Display in another room through a wall.
- Conference room screens fed from a table box.

FAQ
Will a 50 foot passive cable work at 4K?
Rarely at 60 Hz. It may work at 1080p, which masks the problem until a higher mode is used.
Are optical cables reliable?
Yes, and they are lighter and thinner than copper equivalents. They are directional, so check the labelling.
Which is better, optical HDMI or HDBaseT?
Optical is simpler for video only. HDBaseT suits installations that also need USB, control or Ethernet over the same run.
Do I need power at both ends?
Usually only at the source end. Check the specification for the specific cable.
