Quick answer: A 4K HDMI switch connects several sources to one display input and passes the selected stream. The 18G models carry 4K60, and the 48G models carry 4K120 and 8K60. HDCP 2.2 or 2.3 support is mandatory for protected 4K content, and the automatic mode follows the source that powers on. An AV receiver with enough inputs does the same job without a second box.
4K HDMI Switch: Four Sources, One Display, One Remote
A 4K HDMI switch takes several sources and sends one of them to the display, which is the part a room needs when the television has fewer inputs than the shelf has devices. The switch is the opposite of the splitter: the splitter duplicates one source to several displays, and the switch selects between several sources for one display. The bandwidth class decides what the switch can pass, the handshake decides whether the source will talk to it, and the control method decides whether the room needs a second remote. This guide covers what the switch does, the 18G and 48G models, the HDCP handling, the automatic and the manual selection, and the comparison against the inputs already built into an AV receiver.
What a Switch Does
The function is selection, and the switch sits between the sources and the display. Each source connects to an input, the display connects to the single output, and the box routes the chosen input through to the output. The unselected inputs are disconnected from the output rather than mixed, which is the property that separates the switch from a splitter running backwards. The switch also handles the handshake on behalf of the display, so the source sees a valid sink and negotiates the mode it will send. The practical result is one cable to the television and one remote for the selection, in place of a reach behind the panel every time the source changes.
Four Sources, One Display
The four-input switch is the common configuration, and it matches the shelf that holds a console, a streamer, a disc player, and a computer. The inputs are equal, and the selection is a route rather than a priority, so any source can drive the display at any time. The output is a single port, and the cable from it to the display is the only run the room needs to the panel. The box sits with the sources rather than with the display in most installations, which keeps the long cable to one and the short cables to four.
Automatic Against Manual Selection
The automatic mode watches the inputs for a live signal and switches to the source that powers on, which is the behaviour that makes the box invisible in daily use. The manual mode selects through a button on the box or the remote, and it is the mode for the installation where the automatic logic chooses the wrong device. The better boxes offer both and remember the last state. The automatic mode is convenient and occasionally wrong, because a device that wakes in the background can steal the input, and the manual mode is the fallback that fixes it.
Bandwidth Classes
The switch has a bandwidth class, and the class is the ceiling on what passes through the box. An 18G model carries the 4K60 stream, the 1080p at 240 Hz, and the HDR formats that fit inside the class, and it does not carry the 4K120 stream at the full depth. A 48G model carries the 4K120 and the 8K60 streams as well, and it is the part for the console and the high refresh display. The class is on the specification sheet, and it is the number to match against the streams the sources actually send, not the resolution on the front panel, because a box labelled 4K can be the older 10G class that stops at 4K30.
The 4K60 18G Models
The 18G switch is the mainstream part, and it covers the current console at 4K60, the streamer, the disc player, and the computer at 4K60 with HDR. The class carries the 1080p at the high refresh rates as well, which makes it the part for the desk with the older gaming monitor. The limit appears at the 4K120 stream, where the box negotiates down or refuses the mode. The class is the check, and the 18G box is the correct purchase for the room whose top stream is 4K60 from every source.
The 4K120 48G Models
The 48G switch is the gaming part, and it carries the 4K120 stream with the compression enabled at the source and the display, plus the 8K60 stream and the variable refresh rate that rides with them. The box runs warmer and costs more, because the higher rate needs more power and tighter signal integrity inside the chassis. The feature set that comes with the class is the part the gaming room wants: the variable refresh rate, the auto low latency mode, and the quick frame transport. The check is the class, and the class is what carries the features as well as the bandwidth.
The Handshake and HDCP
The handshake is the part that decides whether the switch works with the components rather than on paper. Every source reads the display capability data before it sends a stream, and the switch has to present that data on behalf of the display, which means it stores an EDID and serves it to the selected input. The copy protection check runs end to end, from the source through the switch to the display, and the switch has to hold a valid key for the protected content to pass. A box that handles both correctly is invisible in the room; a box that misses either produces a black screen on the protected content and a working picture on everything else.
EDID and the Source
The capability data is stored in the switch and served to the source, and the quality of that stored data sets what the room can do. The better boxes copy the EDID from the connected display at installation, so the source sees the display’s real capabilities rather than a generic list. The cheaper boxes carry a fixed table, which can advertise modes the display does not support and produce a black screen at the top resolution. The mode the box advertises is worth checking after the installation, and the fix where the table is wrong is the stored copy from the display.
HDCP 2.2 and 2.3
The copy protection version is the second check, and it applies to the protected 4K content rather than to everything. The 2.2 version is the one the current 4K streams use, and the 2.3 version extends the handling for the newer delivery paths, and the switch must support the version the source and the display negotiate. A box with only the older version passes the unprotected desktop and blocks the film, which is the symptom to recognise. The specification lists the version, and the listing is the check to make before the purchase.
Against the Receiver’s Inputs
The AV receiver already contains a switch, and the question is whether the separate box adds anything. The receiver’s inputs pass through its video path, and where the receiver is current and its inputs are the same class as the sources, the built-in switching is the tidier answer: one box, one remote, and the audio already routed to the amplifier. The separate switch earns its place where the receiver is older than the sources, where its video path caps the class, or where the display is fed directly for the lowest latency in a game. The two arrangements can also be combined, with the switch feeding one receiver input.
When the AVR Switch Is Enough
The receiver is enough where its video path matches the sources and the display. A current receiver with the 2.1 class inputs passes the 4K120 stream and the features with it, and its input count is usually four to eight. The audio is the reason the receiver sits in the chain at all, and the switching comes free with it. The check is the receiver’s video specification rather than its audio specification, because the audio capability says nothing about the class of the video path behind it.
When the Box Is Better
The separate box is better where the receiver’s video path is older than the sources, where the display is connected directly to the source for the game latency, or where the receiver sits in a cabinet that is hard to reach. The direct connection removes the receiver’s processing from the video path, which is the arrangement the competitive game room uses, and the switch then selects the sources into the display while the audio goes to the receiver on a separate path. The box is the cheaper upgrade than a new receiver, and it is the part that keeps the old amplifier in service.
Switch Classes and the Streams
| Model | Top stream | HDCP | Control | Best for |
|---|
| 10G budget | 4K30 | 1.4 only | Manual button | Legacy 1080p shelf |
| 18G four port | 4K60 HDR | 2.2 | Remote and auto | Console, streamer, disc |
| 48G four port | 4K120, 8K60 | 2.3 | Remote, auto, VRR pass | Current console and PC |
| 18G two port | 4K60 HDR | 2.2 | Manual | Desk with two devices |
| Matrix 18G | 4K60 on any output | 2.2 | Menu and remote | Two displays, several sources |
Real-World Application Scenarios
The living room shelf is the standard case. The console, the streamer, the disc player, and the soundbar’s passthrough all want the television’s single good input, and a four port 48G switch gives each one a home with the remote on the coffee table. The desk is the second: the work laptop, the personal computer, and the console share one monitor, and the switch selects between them while the monitor keeps its single cable. The cabinet install is the third, where the receiver is deep in a closed unit and the switch sits on the shelf above it, so the source selection does not require opening the door. The competition room is the fourth, and there the switch feeds the monitor directly for the lowest latency while the audio leaves on a separate output.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Does a 4K HDMI switch reduce picture quality?
A: Not on a powered box rated for the stream. The switch routes the digital stream rather than converting it, so the picture is the stream the source sent. Quality problems appear on a box rated below the stream, where the link negotiates a lower mode, or on a box with a poor power supply that drops the link under load. The class and the build are the two things to check.
Q: Can a switch send one source to two TVs?
A: No. A switch selects one input for one output, so the displays see the selected source and nothing else. Sending one source to two displays at once is the splitter’s job, and the two functions are sold as separate parts. A matrix box combines both and routes any input to any output, and it costs more than either single-function part.
Q: Why does my switch show a black screen on 4K films?
A: The copy protection check is failing. The switch must support the HDCP version the source and the display negotiate, and a box with only the older version passes the unprotected desktop and blocks the protected film. The symptom is the distinguishing test, and the fix is a switch with the 2.2 or the 2.3 support that the content requires.
Q: Does the switch need its own power supply?
A: Yes. Every switch with an active video path carries a supply, and the passive boxes that draw from the HDMI line are limited to the low-rate modes. The supply is what powers the routing circuit and the capability memory. A switch that loses power passes nothing, which is the reason the supply goes on the same strip as the sources.
Q: Will a switch pass Dolby Vision and HDR10?
A: It will where the box is rated for the 4K60 stream at the required depth and supports the HDCP version. The HDR metadata rides inside the video stream, so a box that passes the stream without altering it passes the metadata with it. The cheaper boxes that re-clock or compress the stream can strip the metadata, which is why the class and the build both matter.
