Quick Answer / Summary: Keep the XLR input in line mode rather than mic mode, leave +48V phantom off while connecting, and use a wiring where the 3.5 mm tip goes to pin 2 (hot) and the sleeve to pin 1 (ground), with pin 3 tied to sleeve in the standard dual-mono build. If the source is a phone TRRS jack, order a TRRS-aware cable so the microphone pole does not short into the XLR ground.
A 3.5 mm to XLR male cable has a 3.5 mm female end for a source – phone, player, interface headphone or line out – and an XLR male plug for an XLR female input on a recorder, mixer, or interface. The direction matters: you are sending a consumer line-level signal into pro equipment, and the input’s phantom power setting and gain stage set the rules. This guide covers the wiring map, the level math, and the connection order that protects both ends.
Gender Check: What XLR Male Actually Fits
XLR male means three exposed pins on the cable end. It inserts into an XLR female socket – the three-hole jack found on recorder inputs, mixer mic/line inputs, and interface inputs. If your target device has a three-pin socket (pins, not holes), you need the male end; if it has three holes, that is a male-terminated device output and a 3.5 mm to XLR male cable is the wrong direction. Confirm the physical connector in a photo before ordering.
Wiring the 3.5 mm End Correctly
The 3.5 mm end can accept mono, stereo, or headset jacks, and each needs a slightly different internal map. The goal in every case is to land the audio on XLR pin 2 and the ground on pin 1, with pin 3 tied to ground for a clean balanced-connector presentation.
From a Mono (TS) Source
Tip to pin 2, sleeve to pin 1, pin 3 tied to sleeve, ring unconnected. This is the simplest build and the correct one for mono players and single-channel sources.
From a Stereo (TRS) Source
Two options: mono-sum (tip and ring both to pin 2, optionally through 1 kOhm resistors, sleeve to pin 1) for a single XLR input, or split (tip to this XLR pin 2, ring to a second XLR pin 2) when the target has two channels. Pick based on how many XLR inputs the destination offers.
Level and Phantom Rules for the XLR Input
A 3.5 mm line out sits at -10 dBV, about 14 dB below pro line level. Into a line-mode XLR input it works directly with a small gain trim. Into a mic-mode input it overloads the preamp’s first stage, so use the input’s line selector if available or add a -20 dB pad. Phantom power must stay off for the entire connection – the +48V appears on the XLR pins and passes straight into the 3.5 mm source.
3.5 mm to XLR Male Wiring Map
| 3.5 mm Pole | Source Type | XLR Pin | Note |
|---|
| Tip | Mono (TS) | Pin 2 (hot) | Standard build |
| Tip + Ring | Stereo (TRS), mono-summed | Pin 2 (hot) | Both poles tied to pin 2, resistors optional |
| Ring 2 | Headset (TRRS) | Not connected (audio poles only) | Mic pole left open or routed separately |
| Sleeve | All | Pin 1 (ground) | Pin 3 also tied to sleeve in dual-mono builds |
Real-World Application Scenarios
Home studio playback, where a media player 3.5 mm output feeds an interface XLR line input for sample triggering. Podcast recording, where a phone 3.5 mm output plays pre-recorded segments into a recorder XLR input. Live backup, where an amp or receiver 3.5 mm output reaches a mixer XLR line input across a short stage run. In all three cases the cable stays under 3 meters and phantom power is the only real risk.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Does 3.5 mm to XLR male work with my phone?
A: Yes, with a TRRS-aware cable and phantom power disabled on the XLR input. The phone outputs a consumer line level, which line-mode inputs accept directly; mic-mode inputs need a -20 dB pad or line-in selection.
Q: Why is my recording quiet or clipping through the 3.5 mm to XLR male cable?
A: Clipping means the XLR input is in mic mode with a hot line-level source – switch to line mode or add a pad. Quiet usually means the input gain is set for a microphone and the source is a weak line out – raise the input gain.
Q: Can I use a 3.5 mm to XLR male cable for a microphone?
A: Not as intended. That cable sends a 3.5 mm source signal into an XLR input. A microphone is the opposite direction – XLR male at the mic, XLR female at the input – and needs a standard XLR mic cable with phantom power handling.
