A patch lead and a reel of cable are not the same product in different quantities. One is built to be handled, the other is built to be installed and left alone. Buying the wrong one for the job is one of the quieter ways a network ends up underperforming its category.

Two products with two different jobs
The permanent link is the part of the network that nobody touches. It runs from a patch panel in a telecommunications room to an outlet in a wall, and it stays there for the life of the fit-out. Solid conductor, terminated once at each end, tested and documented.
The cordage is the part everyone touches. It runs from the switch to the panel, and from the outlet to the device on the desk. It gets plugged and unplugged, coiled, redirected and occasionally stood on. Stranded conductor, factory terminated, replaced when it fails.
A reel of solid cable in the cordage position will work, and it will not survive the handling. A stranded patch lead used as a permanent link will work at short distances, and it gives away attenuation margin that the channel was counting on.
Why stranded and solid behave differently
Stranded conductor is more flexible because the load is shared across many fine wires. It is also slightly higher in attenuation, because the strands do not pack perfectly and the current path is marginally less efficient.
Solid conductor has lower attenuation and is the reason permanent links are specified as solid. It also fatigues: bend a solid conductor enough times and one strand-equivalent core will crack, which is why it is not the product for a lead that gets moved.
This is how the 100-meter channel is divided. The 90 meters of permanent link gets the better electrical performance because it is the long part; the 10 meters of cordage accepts the slightly higher loss because it is short and has to be durable.
The cordage allowance is shared
The 10 meters of patch cordage in a channel is not 10 meters at each end. It is 10 meters in total across all the cords in the channel.
That is easy to overlook. Two 5-meter leads uses the entire allowance, and a channel with an 85-meter permanent link plus two 5-meter leads is at 95 meters and inside the limit — but only just. A run that was designed around 2-meter leads at each end has 6 meters of headroom that disappears the first time somebody replaces a lead with a longer one.
Buying by length: what actually gets used
Length | Where it goes |
|---|
0.5 m to 1 m | Adjacent patch panel and switch ports in the same rack unit |
|---|
2 m to 3 m | Patch panel to switch in adjacent racks; outlet to device on a desk |
|---|
5 m | Longer intra-rack runs, or a desk some distance from the outlet |
|---|
7 m to 10 m | Desk runs where the outlet is awkwardly placed; the top of the cordage allowance |
|---|
Above 10 m | Not cordage. This is a permanent link, and it needs to be installed and terminated |
|---|
The 25-foot and 30-foot leads sold in retail channels sit just above the cordage allowance at 7.6 and 9.1 meters. They are inside the allowance individually — but a channel with one at each end is not, which is a distinction a retail listing will not make.
Slim leads: a legitimate product with a catch
Slim patch leads use a thinner conductor, often 28 AWG, to make a rack easier to manage and to improve airflow. For short runs between adjacent units they do the job and the space saving is real.
The catch is attenuation. A thinner conductor loses more signal per meter, so a slim lead consumes the channel budget faster than a standard one of the same length. Use them short, avoid them on channels that are already long, and do not use them as a substitute for a horizontal run because they route more easily.
When to buy bulk and terminate on site
Buy bulk when the runs are permanent, when the lengths are not standard, or when the pathway requires pulling through conduit. Field termination also lets you terminate the cable after it is in place, which avoids dragging a factory-made plug through a tight pathway.
Buy pre-terminated when the run is short and standard, when the quantity is small, or when the site has no one with the right tools and test equipment. A factory termination is more consistent than a field one, and consistency is what certification measures.
A common split is bulk for the horizontal and factory leads for the cordage, which is what the channel design assumes in the first place.
Field scenarios
A 60-drop office fit-out. Bulk Cat6 for the horizontals, factory patch leads at 2 meters for the panel-to-switch connections and 3 meters at the desks. Terminations done by one crew with one tool, then certified channel by channel.
A rack being re-cabled for airflow. Slim leads at 0.5 meters between adjacent units, standard leads where the run crosses the rack. Check the total cordage before replacing a long desk lead with a slim one — the length matters more than the diameter.
A home office with one long run to a back room. Bulk cable installed in the wall, terminated at a keystone each end, with short factory leads at both ends. Buying a 30-meter patch lead and running it around the skirting board is the version that disappoints.
FAQ
Can I use a solid Cat6 cable as a patch lead?
It will work. It will not tolerate repeated handling, and it uses channel budget at a slightly higher loss than a stranded lead.
Can I use a stranded Cat6 patch lead as a permanent link?
At short distances it functions. It is not what the channel design assumes, and it is not the product that certifies most reliably at length.
How long can a Cat6 patch cable be?
The channel allows up to 10 meters of cordage in total. Individual leads longer than that take the channel outside the standard.
Are slim Cat6 patch cables as good?
For short runs, yes. Their higher attenuation makes them a poor choice for the longer positions in a channel.
Should I buy pre-made or make my own patch leads?
Buy them. Factory terminations are more consistent, and a patch lead is a consumable rather than a permanent installation.
Does a longer patch cord reduce speed?
It consumes channel budget rather than speed directly. On a run already close to its distance limit, it can be the difference between certifying and not.
