Quick Answer / Summary: A 15 ft HDMI cord works well with older 1080p-era devices – lighter formats leave ample passive margin at 4.6 m. The HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC) printed on packaging is essentially unused by consumer gear: ethernet-over-HDMI never achieved device support, so buy for video bandwidth, not HEC. For mixed-generation chains, put the newest certified cord in the link and let the older devices run their lighter formats.
A fifteen-foot HDMI cord often joins an older system: an AVR from the 1080p era, a first-generation 4K TV, a source that predates the current certification logos. Long cords and legacy devices are a workable pairing – the formats are lighter and the distance is easy – but two topics generate questions: the HDMI Ethernet Channel that packaging still advertises, and the handshakes between generations of equipment. This guide addresses both.
The Ethernet Channel That Wasn’t
HEC – the HDMI Ethernet Channel – was defined to carry 100 Mbit ethernet alongside video so networked devices could share a cable. In practice, consumer support never materialized: virtually no TVs, sources, or AVRs implement it, and the feature is dead weight on the specification sheet. At fifteen feet, the practical instruction is simple: ignore the HEC logo and the ‘with ethernet’ suffix. Buy the cord for its certified video bandwidth, run networking over actual network cable, and treat HEC as the historical footnote it is. eARC, by contrast – which shares the HEC-capable wiring – is very much alive and works over any certified cord.
1080p-Era Gear: The Easy Case
Older devices output lighter formats, which makes fifteen feet effortless. A 1080p AVR switching Blu-ray and streaming boxes runs about 4.95 Gbps – any functioning High Speed cord carries it across the room with margin to spare. The reliability factors at this tier are mechanical rather than bandwidth: connector retention after a decade of service, jacket integrity, and oxidation on unplated contacts. A new fifteen-foot cord in an old system is often the cheapest upgrade available – it removes the aged cord as a variable while the format requirements stay trivial.
Mixed-Generation Chains and Upscaling
When a 4K TV hosts 1080p sources, the cord carries the TV’s input format – 1080p from the source – and the TV scales internally: the cord’s load is the source’s output, not the panel’s native resolution. The reverse case, an upscaling AVR or player delivering 4K60 to an older TV, loads the cord at 18 Gbps, and certification matters again. The mixed-chain rule: identify the highest format actually crossing the cord, and certify to that. And when upgrading one link at a time, put the newest certified cord into the newest highest-bandwidth link – the 4K leg – and let the legacy legs run their light formats on any decent cord.
15 ft Cord with Legacy and Mixed Gear
| Chain | Format on Cord | Requirement | Note |
|---|
| 1080p sources + 1080p TV | 1080p (~4.95 Gbps) | Any High Speed | Trivial at 15 ft |
| 1080p sources + 4K TV | 1080p from source | Any High Speed | TV scales internally |
| 4K60 source + 4K TV | 18 Gbps | Premium certified | Certification matters |
| Upscaling AVR to TV | 18 Gbps | Premium certified | AVR’s output is the load |
| HEC ethernet | Unused by devices | None | Ignore the logo |
Real-World Application Scenarios
Legacy home theaters keeping a 1080p AVR in service with a fresh fifteen-foot cord. Mixed systems where a 4K panel hosts older sources and the cord’s actual load stays light. Replacing the cord as the cheap first step when an older system misbehaves. Purchasing decisions where ignoring the HEC marketing and buying for certified video bandwidth saves money.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Do I need a 15 ft HDMI cord ‘with ethernet’ (HEC)?
A: No. The HDMI Ethernet Channel was never adopted by consumer devices – virtually nothing implements it. Buy for certified video bandwidth and ignore the HEC label; run real networking over network cable. eARC, which uses similar wiring, is the related feature that actually works.
Q: Will a 15 ft HDMI cord work with my older 1080p receiver and devices?
A: Easily – 1080p-era formats occupy a fraction of the link’s capacity, so fifteen feet is trivial for any functioning High Speed cord. The practical concerns are mechanical: aging connectors and oxidized contacts, which a new cord eliminates.
Q: When I mix old and new devices, what format does the cord carry?
A: The format the source actually outputs – a 1080p player into a 4K TV puts 1080p on the cord, and the TV scales. An upscaling AVR that outputs 4K60 puts 18 Gbps on the cord regardless of its sources. Certify the cord to the highest format crossing it.
