Cat6 is a category of twisted-pair copper cable specified to 250 MHz of bandwidth. That one sentence carries most of the answer, because everything the cable can and cannot do follows from that number and from the four-pair construction it describes.

The definition, without the padding
A cable is a bundle of insulated copper conductors arranged in twisted pairs, wrapped in an outer jacket, and rated to carry signals up to a stated frequency while meeting limits on how much the pairs interfere with each other and how much signal is lost along the way.
Cat6 is the category where that rated frequency is 250 MHz. The construction that gets there has two distinguishing features: four twisted pairs with a plastic separator running down the middle to hold them apart, and conductors that are typically 23 AWG rather than the 24 AWG common in the category below.
The separator — usually called a spline — is not decoration. Keeping the pairs physically separated reduces how much energy leaks from one pair into another, and at 250 MHz that leakage is the main thing standing between the cable and the next performance tier.
What it is specified to do
Property | Figure |
|---|
Bandwidth | 250 MHz |
|---|
1000BASE-T | 100 m |
|---|
2.5GBASE-T | 100 m |
|---|
5GBASE-T | 100 m |
|---|
10GBASE-T | 55 m |
|---|
Channel length | 100 m maximum for the rates above that support it |
|---|
Connector | RJ45 |
|---|
Typical conductor | 23 AWG |
|---|
ISO/IEC equivalent | Class E |
|---|
The 55-meter figure against 10GBASE-T is the one to hold on to. It is a specification, not a caution, and it is the reason Cat6A exists at all.
What it is used for
Horizontal cabling in commercial buildings. The run from a telecommunications room to a desk, an outlet or a wireless access point. This is the single largest use of the category.
Access point uplinks. Where access points run 2.5G or 5G, Cat6 carries the full 100-meter channel at that rate. This is where a large share of Cat6 spending now lands, because client devices have outgrown the 1G uplink before the cabling has.
Server and shorter backbone links. Where the run is under 55 meters, Cat6 carries 10GBASE-T. In a rack row or between adjacent rooms, that covers a lot of ground.
Building services. Cameras, access control, intercom, digital signage, building management. Almost all of it runs at 1G, which Cat6 carries with more margin than the job needs.
PoE devices. Phones, cameras, access points and door controllers that draw power over the data pair. Cat6 is specified with the temperature and construction options that PoE installations need.
What Cat6 is not
It is not a fiber replacement. The 100-meter channel is a hard ceiling, and no copper category exceeds it. Anything longer needs fiber or an intermediate switch.
It is not a guarantee of 10 Gigabit. 10GBASE-T is limited to 55 meters on Cat6, and a marginal channel will negotiate the rate and then retransmit rather than fail cleanly.
It is not the top of the ladder. Cat6A carries 10G over the full channel; Cat8 carries 25G and 40G over 30 meters. Cat6 is the middle of the range and is likely to stay there, because it is the point where price and capability balance for horizontal work.
It is not one product. The category sets a performance floor. Within it there are unshielded and shielded constructions, solid and stranded conductors, different jacket ratings for different spaces, and a wide spread in conductor quality.
Reading a Cat6 jacket
Every compliant cable carries a printed legend with the category, the conductor gauge, the temperature rating, the listing mark and often a sequential length marking. That legend is the only reliable identification. Color, brand and purchase date tell you nothing about the category, and a cable sold as Cat6 without a legible legend is a cable you cannot verify.
Types within the category
Variant | What it changes |
|---|
U/UTP | Unscreened pairs, unscreened overall. The default for offices |
|---|
F/UTP | An overall foil screen around all four pairs |
|---|
S/FTP and similar | Screened pairs plus an overall screen or braid |
|---|
Plenum, riser and general-purpose jackets | Where the cable is permitted to be installed, driven by fire performance |
|---|
Solid and stranded | Permanent link against patch lead |
|---|
Bare copper and clad conductors | Whether the conductor matches what the category assumes |
|---|
Shielded constructions only deliver their advantage when the screen is bonded at the terminations. An unbonded screen is an extra conductor with nowhere to go.
How Cat6 compares with what came before
| Cat5 | Cat5e | Cat6 |
|---|
Bandwidth | 100 MHz | 100 MHz | 250 MHz |
|---|
1G to 100 m | Yes | Yes | Yes |
|---|
2.5GBASE-T | Not specified | 100 m | 100 m |
|---|
5GBASE-T | Not specified | Not specified | 100 m |
|---|
10GBASE-T | Not specified | Not specified | 55 m |
|---|
Typical conductor | 24 AWG | 24 AWG | 23 AWG |
|---|
Pair separator | No | No | Usually a spline |
|---|
The step from Cat5 to Cat5e was about reliability at the same bandwidth. The step from Cat5e to Cat6 was about raising the ceiling. That distinction explains why Cat6 is the category that opened up 5G and short-run 10G, and why the two steps behave so differently in the field even though both look like small changes on a specification sheet.
Field scenarios
A 300-desk office, new build, 1G switches with a plan to move to 2.5G. Cat6. It carries the current rate, it carries the next one at full distance, and 10G stays available on the shorter runs without a re-cable.
A camera installation across a large yard. Cat6 to the 100-meter limit, then fiber for the rest, or an intermediate switch with a PoE budget sized for the far end.
A home wired during a renovation. Cat6 makes sense if the walls are open. The cable cost difference against Cat5e is small next to the cost of opening the walls again.
FAQ
Is Cat6 the same as Ethernet cable?
Every Cat6 cable is an Ethernet cable, but "Ethernet cable" covers every category. Cat6 is one specific rung of that ladder.
How many wires are in Cat6?
Eight conductors, arranged as four twisted pairs.
Does Cat6 need a special connector?
It uses RJ45 like the categories either side of it, but the components must be rated to Cat6 for the channel to be a Cat6 channel.
Is Cat6 good for gaming?
It is more than enough. The limiting factor in a home gaming connection is almost never the cable.
How long does Cat6 last?
The cable itself is durable. Performance drifts with work at the terminations and with changes to the pathway rather than with age alone.
Should I buy Cat6 or Cat6A?
Cat6 unless 10GBASE-T has to reach 100 meters or alien crosstalk in a dense bundle is a design constraint.
