Most comparisons of these two read as though Cat8 were Cat6 with a bigger number on the box. It is not. Cat8 is a short-reach cable specified to a 30-meter channel, and that one figure changes what it is for.

Why the limit is 30 meters and not 100
40GBASE-T puts far more energy down four pairs than 10GBASE-T does, across a much wider frequency range. Holding that signal cleanly requires the crosstalk budget to be extremely tight, and at those frequencies the dominant problem stops being crosstalk between pairs inside one cable and becomes alien crosstalk — coupling between cables lying side by side in a bundle.
The standard’s answer was a shorter channel and a fully shielded construction for every cable in it. 30 meters is the compromise that came out of that: enough to cross a rack row, nowhere near enough to cross a building.
That is why Cat8 is not a "better Cat6" you can substitute in a horizontal cabling design. It is a different product with a different job.
Where Cat8 belongs
- Top-of-rack to end-of-row switch links. This is the canonical Cat8 application: a short, fully shielded run between two switches in the same row.
- Storage and server interconnects inside a single row. Where a 25G or 40G link is needed and the two ends are close.
- Spine connections in a small hall. Where the physical distance genuinely fits inside the 30-meter budget with the patch cords included.
Note the phrase "with the patch cords included". The 30-meter figure is a channel, and the channel includes the cords at both ends. In a rack row that detail is easy to lose: 24 meters of cable plus two 3-meter cords is 30 meters, and nothing is left over.
Where Cat6 still wins, and usually does
Everything horizontal. A desk, an access point, a camera, a door controller — none of those are inside a 30-meter cable path in most buildings, and none of them need 25G.
Cat6 also wins on the small matter of the interface. Cat8.1 uses RJ45, which is the reason it exists: it gives a 1 GHz channel that can still land on ordinary patch panels. Cat8.2 goes to 2 GHz with a non-RJ45 interface, which puts it in the same ecosystem problem Cat7 has.
The 40 Gigabit question
The honest first question is whether 40GBASE-T is needed at all. In most network designs, the link that actually has to move large volumes is the switch interconnect, and those are frequently built from aggregated 25G ports rather than single 40G ports. If the answer is aggregated 25G, the cabling requirement is the same in either case — the category is chosen by the channel length and the rate, not by the marketing tier.
If the answer is genuinely 40GBASE-T over a short row, Cat8 is the only copper option. Fiber is the other answer, and in a new data hall it is often the cheaper one once the switch ports are counted.
The patch cord is part of the channel
A 30-meter budget sounds generous until you itemize it. Consider a 24-port switch at the top of a rack connected to a switch two racks away: 18 meters of cable between the panels, a 3-meter cord at each end, and the channel is 24 meters. Add a cable management arm that forces a longer route and it is 29.
Two habits keep this safe. Measure the pathway rather than the straight-line distance, because the pathway is what the cable follows. And order cords at the length the run needs rather than the length that happens to be in the store room — a slack 5-meter cord at each end spends four meters of channel budget on nothing.
Why the shielding requirement is not incidental
Every Cat8 channel is fully shielded, and that is a requirement rather than an option. At 1 and 2 GHz, a shielded construction is how the specification stops the cable from acting as an antenna and how it keeps alien crosstalk inside limits.
The consequence is that a Cat8 installation inherits a grounding obligation. The shield has to be bonded at the terminations, the patch panels have to be designed for it, and the bonding system has to exist. In a data center that is normal practice. In a building where everything else is unshielded, adding a shielded island raises a question about where its ground reference lives.
Field scenarios
A colocation cage adding a new switch in the same row. Cat8.1 patch leads for the switch-to-switch links, Cat6A for everything leaving the cage. The 30-meter limit is not a constraint and the shielding is what the specification calls for.
An office asking for Cat8 to the desk "so it never needs re-cabling". This is a category error. The runs exceed 30 meters, so Cat8 cannot be installed at all. Cat6A is the correct answer for 10G to the desk.
A lab that wants 40GBASE-T between two adjacent racks. Measure the actual channel — cable plus both cords — before ordering. If it lands at 28 meters, Cat8 works; if it lands at 34, it does not, and the design has to change rather than the cable.
FAQ
Is Cat8 faster than Cat6?
It supports higher rates — 25G and 40G — but only over a 30-meter channel. Over a 100-meter horizontal run it cannot be installed at all.
Can I use Cat8 for normal Ethernet?
Electrically it will carry lower rates, but its 30-meter limit makes it impractical for horizontal cabling, and you would be paying shielded-Cat8 prices for a job Cat6 handles.
What is the difference between Cat8.1 and Cat8.2?
Cat8.1 is a 1 GHz channel over RJ45, aligning with ISO Class I. Cat8.2 is a 2 GHz channel that is not RJ45, aligning with Class II. Both are specified to 30 meters.
Does Cat8 need special grounding?
Its shield has to be bonded at the terminations like any other shielded system. In a data center that is routine; in an office it is a reason to think twice before specifying shielded cable.
Is Cat8 overkill?
For a rack row running 40G links, no. For horizontal cabling, it is not overkill — it is unusable at the distance.
What should I use for 10G to the desk?
Cat6A. It carries 10GBASE-T over the full 100-meter channel and uses the standard RJ45 interface.
