Cat6 is rated to 250 MHz. Cat6A is rated to 500 MHz. Most of the argument about which to buy is fought over that doubling, and most of it is decided by something else entirely: how far the cable has to go.
Figure 1: Shielding construction and foil wrapping in high-frequency ethernet cables. The single figure that separates the two in practice is the 10GBASE-T distance limit. Cat6 carries 10GBASE-T to 55 meters. Cat6A carries it to the full 100-meter channel. If your longest run is 40 meters, the two categories perform identically at every speed you will use. If it is 72 meters, one of them works and the other does not.

Buy Cat6 when the target is 1G or 5G, or when 10GBASE-T runs stay under 55 meters and are likely to stay that way.
Buy Cat6A the moment 10GBASE-T to 100 meters appears in the requirement, or when alien crosstalk in a dense bundle is a design constraint.
The number people get wrong
The common shorthand is "Cat6 does 10 Gig". It does, over 55 meters, and that is a specification rather than a caution. A 70-meter Cat6 run does not do 10GBASE-T, and no amount of link tuning changes the limit — the 500 MHz band is what holds the signal over the full channel, and 250 MHz is not wide enough.
Real-world results on Cat6 vary more widely than the single figure suggests. Documented conditions put 10GBASE-T on Cat6 at 110 feet (33.5 meters) in some installations and 165 feet (50 meters) where alien crosstalk is low. Both are inside the 55-meter limit. The practical reading is that Cat6 at 10G is a short-run proposition, and the shorter your runs, the safer it is.
Why the extra bandwidth costs more
Three things change between the two constructions, and all three have a price.
Geometry. Cat6 usually carries a spline — a plastic cross running down the center of the cable that physically separates the four pairs and holds their positions. Cat6A keeps that idea but tightens the tolerances further, because crosstalk margins shrink as frequency rises. Tighter geometry means tighter process control at the factory, which is the first place the cost difference comes from.
Alien crosstalk. This is noise coupling between adjacent cables rather than between pairs inside one cable, and it is what limits performance in a bundle. Cat6A specifies parameters for it. In a cabinet with 48 cables stacked in a tray, that is a design constraint rather than a laboratory curiosity.
Termination time. Larger conductors, tighter pair geometry and shielded constructions all slow the installer down. On a 200-drop job the labor difference can exceed the material difference, which is why the "cost" of moving to Cat6A is never just the cable price.
Cost driver | Cat6 | Cat6A |
|---|
Cable per meter | Lower | Higher |
|---|
Connectors | Standard RJ45 | RJ45 with tighter tolerance or shielded |
|---|
Termination time per outlet | Baseline | Longer |
|---|
Certification testing | Standard permanent link | Standard permanent link plus alien crosstalk where specified |
|---|
Rework rate | Baseline | Higher if the installer is unfamiliar with the construction |
|---|
What does not change
Both categories use the same RJ45 interface, the same T568 wiring assignment and the same 100-meter channel structure: 90 meters of permanent link plus up to 10 meters of patch cordage.
That point matters more than it sounds. The channel is only as good as its lowest-rated component. Cat6A cable terminated on Cat6 jacks is a Cat6 channel. If you are paying for Cat6A, the jacks, patch panels and patch cords have to be Cat6A as well, or the money is spent on a rating nothing in the link can reach.
Both categories also require pure copper conductors. Copper-clad aluminum does not meet either specification regardless of what is printed on the jacket, and the verification method is a simple scrape or a resistance measurement rather than a datasheet.
Where 5G changes the decision
The tier most specifications skip is 2.5G and 5G. NBASE-T runs 2.5 Gbps over Cat5e to 100 meters and 5 Gbps over Cat6 to 100 meters.
That reframes the Cat6-versus-Cat6A question for a large share of projects. If the requirement is 5 Gigabit — access points, workstation uplinks, camera backhauls — Cat6 delivers it at full distance for a fraction of Cat6A’s installed cost. Cat6A only starts to pay when 10GBASE-T at building length is genuinely on the table.
There is also a downshift behavior worth knowing about. NBASE-T includes a feature where link partners step down to a lower speed when the cabling cannot hold the highest common rate. That is convenient, and it is also a quiet way for a marginal link to sit at 1G for years without anyone noticing.
Scenarios
A 60-drop office refit, longest run 38 meters. Cat6. Every speed up to 10GBASE-T works at that distance, and Cat6A buys headroom the building layout cannot use.
A 60-drop office refit, longest run 72 meters, 10GBASE-T specified to the desk. Cat6A. There is no configuration of Cat6 that meets the requirement, so the choice is not a trade-off.
A hospital or factory with a dense backbone and high EMI. Cat6A, and usually a shielded Cat6A construction. Alien crosstalk control and the tighter geometry are both working in your favor, and the shielded version adds a grounding discipline you have to design for.
A warehouse running high-power PoE lighting in long bundles. Conductor size matters as much as bandwidth here. Larger conductors lower DC resistance and reduce heat, which is what allows a larger bundle under a thermal derating. Cat6A is often specified for this reason rather than for speed.
A tender that says "Cat6 minimum". Ask what the 10GBASE-T distance requirement is. If the answer is "100 meters", the tender needs restating, because Cat6 cannot meet it.
FAQ
Is Cat6A worth the extra cost?
Only against a specific requirement. If 10GBASE-T must reach 100 meters, or if alien crosstalk in a dense bundle is a constraint, it is not optional. If the target is 1G or 5G at ordinary distances, Cat6 meets it and Cat6A is headroom.
Can I mix Cat6A cable with Cat6 jacks?
Physically yes, electrically the channel drops to Cat6. The channel is only as good as its lowest-rated component.
Does Cat6A need shielded cable?
No. Unshielded Cat6A (U/UTP) exists and meets the category. Shielded variants help in high-EMI environments, and they require the screening to be bonded correctly at both ends to be worth anything.
Is Cat6A the same as Class EA?
They describe the same performance level from two standards families. Class EA is the ISO name for the assembled link; Cat6A is the component category. A report can be issued against either limit table.
How do I verify what I received?
Read the jacket legend and test the reel. For Cat6A, the permanent-link certification report — including power-sum parameters at the top of the band — is the document that settles it.
Will Cat6A make my network faster?
No. It raises the ceiling. Speed comes from the switches, the NICs and the service behind them.
